Pump driver chips specifically for automobiles meet the needs of high temperature environments and long service life


To meet more challenging customer deployment requirements, Melexis has further expanded the MLX90412 product family. The latest 2.2A pump/fan driver chip meets automotive requirements and is optimized for high temperature environments and extended service life.


Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, has launched the MLX90412GLW, a single-coil pump/fan chip with an integrated driver stage for applications with high ambient temperatures, such as automotive water pumps. The MLX90412GLW can drive pumps up to 15W in internal combustion engine (ICE) applications with a maximum operating ambient temperature of up to 135°C. It can drive water pumps up to 20W in an electric vehicle (EV) with a maximum ambient temperature range of 85°C.

The MLX90412GLW meets the increasing demands for service life, up to 15,000 cumulative hours in EV applications such as battery cooling.


The single-coil motor driver chip MLX90412GLW dedicated to automobiles has a full range of advanced protection. The single-coil water pump based on the Hall sensor has a well-known starting reliability.

With the MLX90412GLW, pump manufacturers can implement a comprehensive portfolio of water pump solutions. The MLX90412GLW can be configured with a variety of BLDC commutation options, ranging from sine wave mode (ideal for lowest noise performance for EVs compared to high torque mode) to low EMI mode (suitable for on/off drive mode that requires minimal external EMI filter components).

In addition, the MLX90412GLW can drive not only the most basic switch-mode two-wire pumps, but also variable speed pumps via a PWM interface, access diagnostic feedback for four-wire pumps, and can implement LIN-based three-wire pumps when used in conjunction with the Melexis LIN MCU gateway MLX81113.

Compared with the traditional solutions currently available on the market, the MLX90412GLW has a higher level of integration and requires far fewer external components. The user-friendly GUI supports configuration of all available options and rapid prototyping. The entire development phase can be completed without the aid of any motor control software, allowing for rapid product verification and time to market with minimal engineering resources.
