MAX12900 highly integrated 4-20mA sensor transmitter saves 20% space and reduces power consumption by 50%

now On the 28th, Maxim announced the launch of the MAX12900 ultra-low power, highly integrated 4-20mA sensor transmitter, which helps industrial automation applications create small size, low power consumption, and high precision designs. It is ideal for industrial automation and process control, loop-powered 4-20mA current transmitters, remote instruments, and smart sensors.

Today, system designers have to consider more factors when developing enhanced 4-20mA sensor transmitters. These include: improving measurement accuracy over a wide temperature range, reducing size to suit miniaturization requirements. In addition, designers also need to meet stringent conditions - the total current of the sensor transmitter does not exceed 4mA.

The MAX12900 features a 10 ppm/°C voltage reference, which reduces temperature drift by 3.5 times compared to traditional solutions, effectively improving system accuracy. The small MAX12900 (5mm x 5mm package size) integrates 10 optimized unit circuits, saving 20%-50% of space compared to traditional 4-20mA sensor transmitter solutions. The integrated high-voltage LDO and power sequence control function effectively simplifies the power-on control of 4-20mA sensor transmitters. The device consumes only 250uA of maximum current, saving up to 50% of power compared to traditional solutions. Using the latest MAX12900 solution, the pulse-width modulation data of the microcontroller is converted into a 4-20mA loop current in a 2-, 3-, or 4-wire configuration, effectively reducing the complexity of the solution and saving system cost. The MAX12900 is packaged in a 32-pin TQFN package and operates over an industrial wide temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.

Key Benefits

  • Small size: 20-50% smaller than traditional solutions; 5mm x 5mm package size

  • High accuracy: 10 ppm/°C voltage reference, 3.5 times less drift than conventional solutions; 0.01% linearity

  • Low power consumption: current consumption is 50% lower than traditional solutions; maximum current does not exceed 250uA

evaluate

By using the MAX12900, we have the flexibility to implement both 2-wire and 3-wire configurations in our solution. In addition, due to its high-precision characteristics, it is compatible with both mid-range and high-end 4-20mA transmitters.

--- Juergen Schmollinger, Head of Product Development for Pressure Sensors at IFM

The combination of integration and flexibility, as well as low power consumption and high accuracy, makes the MAX12900 an ideal choice for low-power sensor transmitters and industrial safety applications.

--- Carmelo Morello, Executive Business Manager at Maxim Integrated
