Effective Method for Measuring Ultra-High Resistance

New material innovation and research and development are one of the hot spots in the world's high-tech field today, ranging from large aircraft, rockets, high-speed railways, and automobiles to small power switches, memory chips, flexible displays, batteries, etc.

There are many parameters for evaluating material properties, such as high and low temperature, pressure, high voltage, high current, etc. Here we are discussing the measurement of material insulation or leakage current.


Let's first look at the scale coordinates of current or resistance. According to Ohm's law: R=V/I, if 1V voltage is applied, the current flowing through the 1G resistor is 1nA. If you want to get a current of 1pA, the resistance needs to be 1TΏ; vice versa, to measure the 1TΏ resistance value, if the voltage is still 1V, the measured current is only 1pA. Therefore, the core of insulation resistance testing is the measurement of tiny currents.



Engineers with relevant experience should be able to feel that it is very difficult to accurately, stably and reliably measure currents as low as pA and fA levels! Difficulties include measuring instruments, test fixture materials and connecting cables, and shielding of external noise.

For micro-current testing, the B2981A/B2983A picoammeter/femtoammeter has 6 ½ digits and 0.01fA resolution. In addition to micro-current measurement, the B2985A/B2987A can achieve resistance measurement up to 10PΏ with voltage excitation up to 1000V.

In addition, since it is difficult to judge the stability and reliability of microcurrent measurement as mentioned above, the B2980 series adds a roll mode (testing fluctuations over time and statistical distribution functions, histograms and standard deviations)
