Oscilloscope probe selection and use series: rich passive probes and accessories
From this time on, we will be posting on WeChat in several issues,
Introduce you to the selection and use of oscilloscope probes.
Today we start with passive probes.
Probes can generally be divided into passive and active. I believe everyone is very familiar with passive probes. Currently, when purchasing a Keysight oscilloscope, such as the EXR oscilloscope, the N2873A passive probe will be standard on each channel, which has a DC to 500MHz bandwidth and a 10:1 attenuation ratio.
Today we will take the N2873A passive probe as an example.
Take a look at the rich range of accessories it also comes with.
That’s right, the picture above shows the N2873A probe and corresponding accessories.
Isn’t it colorful?
The N2873A passive probe has a compact shape, with a probe diameter of only 2.5mm. The tip probe is elastically loaded, which can help engineers prevent the probe from slipping off the device under test. In addition, it comes with 4 spare probes (2 spring-loaded probes and 2 rigid probes).
The insulating IC cap keeps the tiny probe between the IC leads, preventing the probe from shorting adjacent leads.
Standard flat blade ground connectors and self-adhesive copper ground pads help reduce ground inductance while providing easy access to the ground. Alligator clips and spring pins are common grounding methods, and shorter grounding methods can provide better measurement accuracy.
12 color rings in four colors can be installed near the oscilloscope end and probe end of the probe. When we use multiple probes, it is convenient to identify the probes used on different channels.
The screwdriver is used to adjust the variable capacitance of the N2873A probe. Most oscilloscopes have a square wave output that can be used for calibration or reference. Probe this connection to check whether the waveform is square. Adjust the variable capacitor as needed to eliminate any undershoot or overshoot.
At the same time, Keysight also has many cost-effective passive probes for users to choose from, including:
•
The standard N2843A (10:1 attenuation ratio) for the DSOX3104G general-purpose oscilloscope;
•
DSOX1204G comes standard with N2140A (10:1/1:1 attenuation ratio) for entry-level oscilloscopes;
•
PP0001A: 1GHz passive probe, 300 V CAT II;
•
PP0002A: 800 MHz passive probe, 1200V CAT II;
•
N2870A (35MHz bandwidth 1:1 attenuation ratio). Generally speaking, in order to avoid additional amplification of oscilloscope noise, small attenuation ratio probes are recommended for small signal measurements.
