On May 15, 2015, the "Fifth Songshan Lake China IC Innovation Summit Forum" was grandly held in Dongguan. Eight companies including Rockchip Electronics, Minxin, and Hexing Communications brought new products. In addition, it also gathered electronic industry bigwigs such as Professor Wei Shaojun, Chairman of the IC Design Committee of the China Semiconductor Industry Association, Cheng Fei, Vice President of Xin Technology, and Zhang Jun, former Vice President of Huawei! Like previous years, this summit was hosted by Dai Weimin, Vice Chairman of the IC Design Committee of the China Semiconductor Industry Association and Chairman and President of VeriSilicon. The summit not only reviewed the development of the semiconductor industry in previous years, but more importantly, conducted in-depth discussions on the hot and difficult issues in the current semiconductor industry!

At the beginning of the meeting, Professor Wei Shaojun announced the overall situation of China's semiconductor industry in the first quarter of 2015. According to Wei Shaojun, the total revenue of China's semiconductor industry in the first quarter of 2015 was 68.55 billion yuan, an increase of 16.7% over the same period. Among them, the revenue of IC design industry, IC manufacturing industry and packaging and testing industry were 22.51 billion, 18.49 billion and 27.55 billion respectively, with an increase of 25.6%, 20.3% and 8.2% over the same period respectively, accounting for 32.8%, 27.1% and 40.1% of the entire semiconductor industry respectively.

From this data, we can see that the revenue of the packaging and testing industry is much higher than that of the other two industries, which also reflects the technical difficulty of packaging and testing. In terms of imports and exports, the total import and export volume of integrated circuits in 2015 was 67.97 billion pieces, an increase of 12.8% over the same period, and the import value was US$48.44 billion, an increase of 9.4% over the same period; the total export volume was 37.97 billion pieces, an increase of 23.2% over the same period, and the export value was US$12.67 billion, an increase of 2.8% over the same period. The average value of each imported integrated circuit is US$0.8, while the average value of each exported integrated circuit is even lower, only US$0.3, less than half of the value of imported integrated circuits!

Overall, China's semiconductor industry is still at the low end of the global semiconductor industry chain and value chain, and has not yet entered the middle end. This situation is difficult to change in the short term, which reflects that China's semiconductor industry chain position is relatively low, but it is in the process of rising. Based on this situation, the domestic semiconductor industry pays special attention to product development. Therefore, this China IC Innovation Summit Forum has inherited the tradition of previous sessions, attaches great importance to the development of its own products, and will stick to it. In terms of the output value of the semiconductor industry, although the total value of the entire industry chain exceeded RMB 300 billion in 2014, the output value related to products was only RMB 104.7 billion (excluding foreign-funded enterprises), accounting for one-third of the industry chain. The export volume of integrated circuits is still relatively optimistic. However, if it is divided into specific companies, it can be found that the main force is foreign-funded enterprises in China, not local enterprises. Of course, the growth of local enterprises is undeniable.

The data also shows that China's chip imports are still growing. The import value in 2014 (217.7 billion US dollars) is slightly lower than the import value in 2013 (231.3 billion US dollars). If the current development trend continues, the import volume in 2015 may continue to remain at around 230 billion US dollars. Wei Shaojun analyzed: "In 2014, the global annual output value was 331.3 billion US dollars, of which 70% entered China, which also shows that China is still a world factory, and this pattern will not change in the next few years!"

From the data, we can see that although the current domestic import volume is higher than the export volume, this trend has been slowly decreasing. In general, domestic chips are speeding up. However, by comparing the import and export volume and the import and export amount, we can find that China is currently only a semiconductor industry power, not a strong country. At the same time, Wei Shaojun also emphasized that if the IC design industry maintains its current development trend, it will be expected to achieve an annual output value of more than US$20 billion this year! This will mean that in the semiconductor industry, mainland China will surpass Taiwan to become an independent entity and become the world's second largest semiconductor industry area. However, this data is still far from the US$50 billion in the United States.

Finally, Wei Shaojun also said that the Pearl River Delta is known as the world's largest technological innovation center after Silicon Valley, and at the same time it is also China's technological innovation and technology research and development base. The development of China's integrated circuits should rely on the Pearl River Delta base with a developed economic market. Relying on the unique geographical advantages and technological advantages of the Pearl River Delta, the development of China's integrated circuits will undoubtedly take a big step forward!
