On November 13 , the Memory and Data Storage Technology Summit Forum, as an important part of the Wuhan Optical Expo, opened at the InterContinental Hotel. The forum was co-organized by IC Coffee and the China Optics Valley Integrated Circuit Industry Innovation Alliance.
Dr. Yang Shining, CEO of Wuhan Xinxin, delivered a speech on the theme of "Memory Industry and Its Development Trends" at the conference, introducing the development trend of the memory industry and Wuhan Xinxin's strategic thinking based on this.
Breakthrough in chip manufacturing: memory is a "necessary battle"
Chips are most widely used in smart terminals. Dr. Yang Shining used the price structure of mobile phones and servers as a starting point to explain the position of memory in the entire semiconductor market. He introduced that in the price structure of smart terminals, memory ranks second, accounting for about 20% , second only to CPU . "In the semiconductor chip market, memory accounts for a quarter, and its growth rate is the fastest compared to other categories. In the next five to ten years, the application of memory chips will continue to expand, and it is expected that the market share will increase to one-third in 2020. "
Based on this, Dr. Yang Shining determined that if China wants to make rapid breakthroughs in the integrated circuit industry and increase the self-production rate of chips, developing memory is a "must-fight". Based on his early experience at Intel , he compared memory with CPU : "Technically, we are not unable to develop CPU . But its ecosystem is complex and it takes time to increase its production. In the field of memory, although technological breakthroughs are also difficult, if we can overcome difficulties and ensure product quality, production can increase rapidly."
Dr. Yang Shining then introduced two important areas of current memory: DRAM and NAND . These two areas account for more than 90% of the memory output value , and most of them are used in personal computers, servers and smartphones. He pointed out that DRAM has experienced an increase in output value in recent years, and the current technological advancement and market growth have slowed down; NAND is just the opposite, and the technological development is breaking through from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. "Two-dimensional NAND is like a parking lot. The more cars there are, the harder it is to park; 3D NAND is like building a three-dimensional parking lot." Dr. Yang Shining said, "In the long run, after the yield rate of 3D NAND is improved, the performance and cost will be better."
Whether it is DRAM or NAND , the memory market is monopolized by a few international giants. "There are only three or four companies in the first tier globally now. This is the overall status of the memory market."
Combining independent research and development with international cooperation, rooted in cutting-edge technology
Faced with such a situation, Wuhan Xinxin conducted careful thinking before planning its technological development. "The importance of memory to national information security is beyond words," Dr. Yang Shining said succinctly, "What we are considering is not whether to do it or not, but whether we can succeed."
Dr. Yang Shining gave a positive answer. He concluded that there are three reasons why China may succeed. The first is the strong domestic demand market. More than 55% of the memory market is in China. Dr. Yang Shining believes that if the quality can be controlled, local companies will have a competitive advantage; the second is that the government and funds are determined to support companies through the accumulation period; the third is that through good projects, talents may quickly gather in China. Based on this understanding, Wuhan Xinxin has made long-term layout in the memory field.
To realize the development blueprint, Dr. Yang Shining attributed the conditions to three points: find the right people, spend the right money, and do the right things. He explained that this is a very difficult task. First of all, it requires some people who are willing to work hard, have a broad mind, and preferably have a successful record to form a team. Secondly, the previous investment practice generally chose outdated technology. He believes that this is too conservative and cannot effectively drive economic benefits. "We must have our own strength in technology, but we don't have to start from scratch. We can seek international cooperation." Dr. Yang Shining suggested, but he also pointed out that if we don't have our own technical strength as support, we will have no say at the negotiation table. "Our approach is to negotiate peace with war, and we must have the determination to fight." Wuhan Xinxin directly chose 3D NAND FLASH technology based on this consideration. Dr. Yang Shining is full of confidence in the future. He believes that Wuhan Xinxin has many years of flash memory experience, a small but international team and a solid intellectual property system as its foundation. Although it still faces many challenges in technology, it will definitely have great potential in the future.
In addition to its own development, Dr. Yang Shining also expressed his desire to develop in coordination with other local companies in the upstream and downstream of the industry chain. He said that Wuxin is willing to work with domestic equipment, materials, design and packaging and testing companies to complete the arduous task of developing the memory industry, combine resources from all parties, cooperate with national strategies, and strive to achieve a zero breakthrough in China's large memory industry.
