The SEMI Technology Community ESD Alliance announced earlier in its latest electronic design market data that electronic system design (ESD) industry revenue increased from US$3.7563 billion in the third quarter of 2022 to US$4.7024 billion in the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 2.52% %. This represents a 13.8% increase from the four-quarter moving average comparing the most recent four quarters to the previous four quarters.
"Electronic Design Automation (EDA) reported record revenue growth in Q3 '23," said Walden C. Rhines, executive sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data report. "This was the highest overall growth since Q4 1998. Computer-aided engineering, IC physical design and verification, printed circuit boards and multi-chip modules, and semiconductor intellectual property categories all reported double-digit growth. Additionally, all geographic regions reported substantial growth.”
Companies tracked by the report showed that they employed 59,737 people globally in the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 10.6% from 53,034 employees in the third quarter of 2022 and an increase of 1% compared to the second quarter of 2023.
The quarterly EDMD report contains detailed revenue information with the following category and geographic breakdown.
Revenue by Product and Application Category – Year-over-Year Change
Computer-aided engineering (CAE) revenue increased 22.4% to $1,657.5 million. The CAE moving average growth in the fourth quarter was 16.7%.
IC physical design and verification revenue surged 45.3% to $904.5 million. The category's fourth-quarter moving average grew 29%.
Printed circuit boards and multichip modules (PCBs and MCMs) revenue increased 23.6% to $426.1 million. The fourth-quarter moving averages for PCB and MCM were up 14%.
Semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) revenue increased 22.1% to $1,575.9 million. The SIP moving average rose 5.3% in the fourth quarter.
Services revenue fell 3.9% to $138.3 million. The services moving average rose 6% in the fourth quarter.
Revenue by Region – Year-over-Year Change
The Americas, the largest reporting region by revenue, purchased $1,984.1 million in electronic system design products and services in the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 22.8%. The fourth-quarter moving average in the Americas rose 11.2%.
Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) purchased $551.1 million in electronic system design products and services in the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 21.5%. The moving average growth rate for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region in the fourth quarter was 13.4%.
Purchases of Japan's electronic system design products and services increased 30.5% to $309.3 million. Japan's moving average for the fourth quarter was up 9.4%.
In the third quarter of 2023, the Asia-Pacific region (APAC) purchased $1.858 billion in electronic system design products and services, an increase of 28.1%. The Asia-Pacific region's moving average growth rate in the fourth quarter was 17.8%.
