Micron Technology accelerates development of EUV-based DRAM

Micron Technology Inc. is using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography to speed up DRAM development. It is joining a race initiated by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the world's No. 1 and No. 2 DRAM makers.

Micron Technology is looking for engineers who will be responsible for developing EUV facilities through various recruitment sites. The engineers will be responsible for developing EUV scanner technology, managing the new EUV equipment and communicating with ASML (the only EUV equipment producer in the world).

Micron ranks third in the global DRAM market, behind Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, with a market share of about 20%.

Micron recently debuted a 176-layer product in the NAND flash memory space. Like other top DRAM manufacturers, the company is producing 10nm third-generation (1z) products. The chipmaker is expected to launch fourth-generation (1a) DRAM in the first half of 2021.

However, the key difference between Micron and Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix is ​​that Micron will not apply EUV technology to 1a DRAM.

Micron suggested in a recent statement that it might not even apply EUV technology to its next-generation DRAM "1-beta" products, given the high costs and technical limitations.

Micron vice president Scott DerBauer said the company will introduce EUV processes in the production of 1-delta products.
