Recently, there has been a wave of good news about radio and television.

On August 27, China Radio and Television announced that the 5G full-band terminals supporting 700MHz and 5G 700MHz base station equipment have completed model approval and network access .

On the evening of August 26, several radio and television listed companies, including Oriental Pearl, Guiguang Network, and Wasu Media, announced that they would participate in the establishment of China Radio and Television. It is worth mentioning that in addition to listed companies, China Radio and Television has a very luxurious shareholder lineup, especially Alibaba and State Grid, as strategic investors, both invested 10 billion yuan , which also gave the yet-to-be-born China Radio and Television a mixed-ownership reform gene. Stimulated by this news, radio and television stocks collectively strengthened on the 27th.

For the future China Radio and Television, its registered capital is tentatively set at 101.2 billion yuan . In other words, it will be a national large-scale enterprise with a capital of 100 billion yuan from the beginning, and will become the fourth largest operator in China.

In addition, Huawei and Qualcomm, two major communications equipment manufacturers, recently announced on their official websites that they have completed the world's first end-to-end system solution demonstration and verification of 5G 700MHz large bandwidth and the world's first data call with China Broadcasting Corporation.

Radio and Television Construction 5G These Advantages Are Fully Utilized

Previously, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology allocated 5G spectrum to the three major operators: China Telecom has 5G frequency resources with a total bandwidth of 100MHz in the 3400MHz-3500MHz band; China Mobile has 5G frequency resources with a total bandwidth of 260MHz in the 2515MHz-2675MHz and 4800MHz-4900MHz bands, of which the 2515-2575MHz, 2635-2675MHz and 4800-4900MHz bands are newly added bands, and the resources in the 2575-2635MHz band are re-cultivated existing bands; China Unicom has 5G frequency resources with a total bandwidth of 100MHz in the 3500MHz-3600MHz band; China Radio and Television has 700MHz band resources.

The 700MHz frequency band is regarded as the golden frequency band for the development of mobile communications. It has advantages such as low signal propagation loss, wide coverage, strong penetration, and low networking cost. It is also suitable for 5G underlying networks.

Within the same range, radio and television use their own frequency bands and need to build fewer base stations; coupled with the cooperation between radio and television and the power grid, electricity costs can be reduced, which is conducive to radio and television covering 5G at a lower cost and providing more price-competitive products.

In addition to being recognized as having the best frequency bands, the low-key radio and television actually also has certain other advantages in 5G network construction, including spectrum, content resources, etc.

Huawei, ZTE, Qualcomm and other 5G equipment approved for network access

China Radio and Television announced today that 5G full-band terminals supporting 700MHz and 5G 700MHz base station equipment have completed model approval and network access. The issuance of 5G equipment model approval certificates involves a number of 700MHz band large-bandwidth base station equipment, 5G mobile phones, CPE terminals, industrial modules, etc. from manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, vivo, and Qualcomm. These are the first batch of 5G 700MHz equipment in China that have completed model approval.

According to China Radio and Television, the relevant 5G terminals and system service capabilities cover all scenarios of the personal user market and the vertical industry user market. The terminal product positioning covers high, medium and low-end, and the chips involve mainstream manufacturers such as Huawei HiSilicon, Qualcomm, and MediaTek . At the same time, under the continuous promotion of China Radio and Television, a number of 5G 700MHz base stations and terminal equipment have also completed relevant approval tests and entered the approval process. The approval of 5G 700MHz equipment for network access this time marks that China's 5G 700MHz industry chain has entered a gradually mature stage, which is of great significance for the accelerated implementation of China Radio and Television's 5G 700MHz network construction.

The first batch of 700MHz equipment approved for network access involves a wide range of manufacturers and equipment models. The R16 version has just been frozen, and China Radio and Television will build the world's only 700MHz 2x30MHz large-bandwidth 5G network. It seems that China Radio and Television's industrial chain promotion efforts are quite in place, which also reflects the confidence of the industrial chain in the 700MHz golden frequency band of radio and television 5G. At the same time, China Radio and Television's achievements in standards and technological innovation also truly reflect the courage and determination of the new radio and television to innovate and develop in the 5G era.

In addition, combined with the co-construction and cooperation with China Mobile, the next actions of the radio and television are worth looking forward to. On May 20, China Mobile and China Radio and Television signed the "5G Co-construction and Sharing Cooperation Framework Agreement". The two parties will carry out 5G co-construction and sharing as well as content and platform cooperation based on the general principles of "equality, voluntariness, co-construction and sharing, win-win cooperation, and complementary advantages", and jointly create a "network + content" ecosystem to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. According to the announcement, the two parties jointly determined the network construction plan, jointly invested in the construction of a 700MHz5G wireless network in a 1:1 ratio, and jointly owned and had the right to use the 700MHz 5G wireless network assets.

Alibaba and State Grid strengthen China Radio and Television

On August 26, several listed companies in the radio and television industry, including Oriental Pearl, Guizhou Broadcasting Network, and Wasu Media, announced that they would participate in the establishment of China Radio and Television . In addition to listed companies, Alibaba and State Grid, as strategic investors, both invested 10 billion yuan in China Radio and Television .

At the end of 2019, there was news that the State Grid will work with the Radio and Television to build 5G. So, what are the advantages of the State Grid participating in 5G construction?

The State Grid's 5G network has the characteristics of high speed and low latency. However, do you know how much resources are needed for 5G base station construction and equipment power consumption? According to data from the China Communications Standards Association, the current no-load power consumption of the operator's 5G base station main equipment sample is about 2.2 kW to 2.3 kW, and the full-load power consumption is about 3.7 kW to 3.9 kW. The power consumption of a single 5G base station is 2.5 to 3.5 times that of a single 4G base station. The increased power consumption of a single base station makes circuit modification inevitable when building a 5G base station, which prolongs the construction period.

State Grid can make up for these problems. It has sufficient infrastructure resources such as power poles, substations, cable trenches, and strong financial strength.

Specifically, the State Grid has more than 5 million substation resources, covering 88% of the land area. Moreover, 90% of these substations are located in residential, industrial and commercial power consumption environments. These substation resources provide convenience for the deployment of edge computing. Edge computing technology can effectively reduce network latency and reduce bandwidth usage caused by long-distance data transmission. It can be used not only for smart grids, but also for other 5G eMBB and uRLLC services.

At the same time, State Grid owns 2.91 million transmission towers. If 5G base station equipment can be installed on these towers, it will become a huge advantage in its 5G construction.

Last words

Several listed companies have become "partners" of China Media Group, and with the support of State Grid Corporation of China, Alibaba and other companies, we will wait and see whether China Media Group's 5G path will become smoother.
