Introduction

The IoT Think Tank and Zhiwu AIoT Industry Research Institute will hold the 2021 China AIoT Industry Annual Conference [Zhiweijianzhu Stepping on "Things" to Seek "Opportunities"] at the Hyatt Regency Shenzhen Airport on December 9! In the afternoon's communication technology session, you will hear the latest trend interpretation of IoT communication technology.

The 5G R17 standard will be frozen at the beginning of next year, and there are several potential evolution directions in the new standard that are worth paying attention to.
Among them, 5G RedCap undoubtedly received the most attention.
RedCap, the full name is Reduced Capability, which means "reduced capability" in Chinese.
If you are unfamiliar with the name RedCap, you may have heard of its previous name, which is NR light, which refers to lightweight 5G.

You may ask, why do we need 5GRedCap?
First, from the perspective of business scenarios covered by 5G:
5G defines three major scenarios: eMBB is mainly for large bandwidth applications, uRLLC is mainly for high reliability and ultra-low latency applications, and mMTC is mainly for low-speed, large-connection IoT applications. It seems very comprehensive, but in fact there is still a gap in demand between the three.
What needs cannot be covered? Here are a few examples:
  • Industrial wireless sensor network : including communication service reliability of 99.99%, end-to-end delay less than 100 milliseconds, reference bandwidth rate less than 2 Mbps, and most of the equipment is stationary, and the battery can be used for at least several years. Of course, for safety-related sensors, the delay requirement is 5-10 milliseconds.

  • Smart city video surveillance : Some cost-effective video scenarios require a bandwidth of 2-4 Mbps, a latency of less than 500 milliseconds, and a reliability of 99%-99.9%; higher-level videos require a bandwidth of 7.5-25 Mbps. Of course, the business model of such scenarios is mainly uplink transmission.

  • Wearable devices : The reference bandwidth for smart wearable applications is 5-50Mbps for downlink and 2-5Mbps for uplink, with peak rates of up to 150Mbps for downlink and 50Mbps for uplink. The battery of the device should be able to last for several days (up to 1-2 weeks).

It is clear that these use cases have higher requirements than NB-IoT but lower than uRLCC and eMBB.
Of course, most of these use cases are now covered by 4G LTE Cat.4 and above, but from a long-term perspective, 4G LTE will sooner or later be phased out, and 5G RedCap is preparing for this.
Next, let’s look at the scale of 5G applications. Cost is the main obstacle to the scale-up of 5G and even the entire AIoT industry.
Today's 5G modules cost hundreds or even thousands of yuan, and many application scenarios simply cannot afford them. So, if I remove some unnecessary functions from them and sell them to me at a lower price, wouldn't that solve the problem? Therefore, Redcap is not a new thing, it is a reduction of existing things.
According to forecasts, the price of RedCap modules will be controlled between 100 and 200 yuan (RMB) in the future.
in conclusion--

In the 4G era, the function of subtracting is cat.1
Reducing functions in the 5G era is reacap
In the future, there will be more similar technologies that dare to delete useless functions, be cheap and simple, and make everyone feel good about it.
Of course, in addition to RedCap, R17 has many other areas worth paying attention to, such as:

  • NB-IoT and eMTC enhancements

  • IIoT and URLLC Enhancements

  • Positioning enhancement

  • Unlicensed spectrum NR enhancement

In addition to 5G Redcap , do you want to know more about the future direction of IoT communication technology? For example:

  • Passive IoT

  • Satellite IoT

  • Next Generation WiFi

  • UWB

  • ......
