The proliferation of modern conveniences in cars, such as infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), has significantly improved the everyday mobility experience. However, at the same time, these consumer conveniences have also given hackers an opportunity to exploit vulnerabilities that have repeatedly been exploited to create security threats. This issue in the automotive industry can and has led to vehicle recalls, lost revenue, and damaged brand image. The question facing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers is no longer whether security measures are needed in automotive networks, but how to implement them in practice without incurring high costs by completely redesigning the design.

The new CryptoAutomotive™ In-Vehicle Network (IVN) Trust Anchor/Boundary Security Device (TA/BSD) Development Kit from Microchip Technology Inc. enables OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to implement security for connected car systems, starting with the most important areas and deploying the highest level of protection everywhere in the car network. The industry’s only automotive tool designed specifically for security, the CryptoAutomotive TA/BSD Development Kit provides system designers with an intuitive starting point for implementing security measures by emulating a secure node in a car network. The tool allows manufacturers to flexibly configure secure nodes according to a variety of specifications and industry standards, covering virtually all security measures. The tool can implement secure key storage, electronic control unit (ECU) authentication, hardware cryptographic accelerators and other cryptographic elements. When used in conjunction with a host microcontroller, it allows designers to implement features such as secure boot and controller area network (CAN) message authentication, including converting CAN 2.0 messages to variable rate CAN data (CAN-FD) by attaching a message authentication code (MAC) where appropriate.

Microchip provides comprehensive automotive security. Working in tandem, the TA/BSD emulation toolkit allows OEMs to continue using existing microcontrollers (MCUs) and then add companion chips emulated by the TA/BSD toolkit to leverage existing MCU firmware that has been certified to security standards. These companion chips will be pre-programmed with built-in security measures and then provided to customers to achieve true hardware key protection. This "add later" approach can bring significant cost and time-to-market advantages compared to redesigning the system with a high-end security MCU. Using a high-end security MCU means that the MCU's firmware architecture needs to be significantly adjusted to implement security measures through both hardware and software.

The TA/BSD toolkit can be used with any ECU, architecture, configuration or bus, allowing for flexible implementation of safety measures in existing systems without major redesigns. The companion chip solution minimizes the amount of MCU code updates, so there is little impact on the functional safety rating of the existing host MCU. This approach also eliminates the need for in-house safety expertise. The tool provides an online graphical user interface (GUI) program with pre-configured options to simplify and facilitate implementation.

Nuri Dagdeviren, vice president of Microchip’s Security Products Division, said:

With the tremendous progress of AI technology, the rapid increase in automation and the imminent emergence of self-driving cars, the industry has generally recognized that ensuring the security of automotive networks is a clear and urgent necessity. With this flexible "add later" approach, Microchip's automotive development kit provides OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers with the necessary tools to quickly implement security measures in existing automotive networks.
