These plans have cross-influenced each other and have been rapidly constructed in some pilot cities. For example, high-voltage cables have been moved from overhead to underground. Taking Qingdao as an example, the main roads and the reconstruction of old high-tech zones require cables to be laid underground. A smart manhole cover is installed every 50m-100m to ensure urban safety and release urban space resources.

Power smart manhole cover product definition and terminal functions

Product definition : The intelligent manhole cover monitoring system can detect whether the manhole cover is lost. The intelligent manhole cover monitoring system uses the current advanced wireless communication technology and power supply technology to continuously collect the manhole cover status and underground environment information, including water level, temperature, harmful gases, etc., and then store and transmit it remotely. The opening and inspection of the manhole cover are incorporated into the unified maintenance management system, and a corresponding alarm processing mechanism is established. The status of the manhole cover location and the alarm content are displayed through an electronic map. For example, if the manhole cover is stolen or damaged, the monitoring personnel can arrive at the scene in time to deal with it and quickly solve the safety hazards.


Power manhole cover monitoring terminal functions:
  • Intrusion alarm: real-time monitoring of manhole cover opening and damage

  • Environmental monitoring: underground O2 concentration, toxic gases such as CO, H2S......

  • Status management: remote control or key opening and closing of manhole covers

  • Realize interconnection with other systems through communication protocol interface

  • Management of the entire life cycle of IoT-based devices


Ethan Li, an engineer at Excelpoint, introduced the application of ADI IC in a typical small and smart application, "Smart Electric Manhole Cover", from sensing (iSensor MEMS), acquisition (Analog to Digital Converter), to digital isolation communication interface (iCoupler), and power supply system (ADI Power by Linear).

System Technical Requirements

  • System power supply: 24Vdc (Range16V~36V) online power supply system (also requires a backup power system or lithium battery power supply system)

  • Manhole cover tilt detection: threshold alarm, 1~2° error

  • Gas detection accuracy: ~5%

  • Communication mode: isolated RS-232/485 bus communication, rate <115200bps, 2G/4G/NB-IOT wireless

  • Static power consumption: <0.02W

  • Alarm response time: <10S

  • Maintenance-free time: more than 1 year



Power Supply System-ADI Power by Linear

The power supply needs to start a high-power mechanical action switch, and also ensure the manual safety of the system power failure after going down the well, so the power supply method adopts online 24Vdc power supply Vin=16~36V, and the backup power supply is 6~8 Li-ion (25.2Vfull/29.4Vfull) charged in series.
Successful design use case: LTC4020 high voltage buck-boost compatible with MPPT solar charging function + LTC4416 external path management high reliability design solution.

In addition, there are also flyback LT8302 isolated power supply solutions, LT860X multi-channel synchronous rectification DC/DC, and silent switcher technology LT8609S, LTC8645S, LTC8650S and other complete power supply solutions for reference.


ADI MEMS G-sensor in the application of inclination detection

Successful design use case: Ultra-low power 3-axis MEMS accelerometer ADXL362, ensuring the static power consumption of the entire machine.

Downhole gas detection

The system generally requires detection of four gases, O2, CO, CO2, and H2S, plus conventional auxiliary quantities. The detection error accuracy is ~5%, which is not a high requirement. Currently, customers' design solutions are still electrochemical sensors plus amplifiers, such as ADA4528 and AD623, and then MCU on-chip ADC acquisition after TIA signal conditioning.

Ethan Li recommends ADuCM355 , a platform-level product for gas detection based on electrochemical sensor solutions released by ADI in 2019 .



ADuCM355 has the characteristics of high integration, high precision, high safety and reliability, small size, and low power consumption. It has significant advantages in the application of gas detection based on electrochemical sensors. Some customers have begun to import and evaluate it. The specific application design of ADuCM355 is not elaborated in this article. Please refer to the circuit notes CN0425 and CN0429 on the ADI official website for details.



Isolation communication interface

Communication mode: isolated RS-232/485 bus communication, functional isolation 2500Vdc, communication rate <115200bps, and 2G/4G/NB-IOT wireless.

Successful design use cases: isolated RS-232, ADM3251E, isolated RS-485, low-cost ADM2483, ADM2587E with integrated isoPower. Compared with traditional optocoupler isolation and capacitive isolation, ADI iCoupler's patented magnetic isolation technology is highly robust and has strong anti-interference capabilities. The new generation of magnetic isolation encoding and decoding technology is upgraded on the basis of the original decoding to further increase the anti-interference performance, with high integration and simple design.
