Solution|Leading a new charging trend: Renesas realizes 100W/140W power adapter solution at low cost

Nowadays, mobile devices have become an indispensable part of people's daily life and work. However, as the types and functions of devices continue to expand, their charging needs have become increasingly complex and diverse. In this context, in order to overcome the challenges of traditional chargers in power output, compatibility and portability, USB-C and USB PD technologies came into being. With excellent charging efficiency and a small and light appearance, it has revolutionized the charging experience of electronic devices.


Based on the USB-C interface and USB PD technology, Renesas launched a 100W/140W power adapter solution. This solution realizes low-cost single-port and dual-port USB-C and USB PD 3.1 power adapter design, with 5-20V/5A 100W dual output or 5-28V/5A 140W single output, which can meet the fast charging needs of most mobile devices in the market.




100W Power Adapter Solution






The 100W power adapter solution uses the TP65H150G4LSG power device, digital offline PWM controller iW3627, optocoupler isolator PS2381-1, digital synchronous rectifier controller iW610, synchronous buck PWM controller ISL8117, and protocol IC iW780.


System Block Diagram


TP65H150G4LSG is a gallium nitride FET in a DFN8*8 package with a withstand voltage of 650V, a transient withstand voltage of 800V, a conduction resistance of 150mΩ, a gate voltage support of 18V, extremely low reverse recovery charge, and reduced switching losses. iW3627 uses advanced digital control technology to support common single-stage isolation and non-isolated topologies (buck, buck-boost or flyback), and can be used as a front-end or independent power supply for solid-state lighting (SSL) applications.


The PS2381-1 is an optically coupled isolator that integrates a GaAs light emitting diode and an NPN silicon phototransistor in a plastic 4-LSOP long flat package that is shielded from ambient light and is ideal for high-density applications.


In terms of the choice of synchronous rectification controller, the iW610 selected in this solution is suitable for all Renesas AC/DC converters and any flyback converter topology, including quasi-resonant (QR), zero voltage switching (ZVS), and active clamp flyback (ACF) topologies operating in DCM and CCM modes. The iW610 can be used with a resonant LLC converter, and the device can operate in a low-side or high-side configuration without an external auxiliary winding. At the same time, the rectifier and magnetic components can be flexibly configured for flyback design, and will not increase costs when used in a high-side configuration.


This solution has two output ends, which are composed of two synchronous buck PWM controllers ISL8117 and a protocol IC iW780. Among them, ISL8117 adopts valley current modulation technology to achieve easy power supply design with the minimum number of components and provide comprehensive protection to prevent unexpected events. ISL8117 has programmable soft start and enable functions, and is equipped with a power good indicator to facilitate power rail sequencing and other internal management requirements.


iW780 is an AC/DC secondary side controller product that supports a variety of D+/D- fast charging protocols in the industry. It integrates the secondary side loop regulation controller, interface protocol controller, and USB VBUS driver into a single IC. And this IC has an internal MCU and hardware interface for multiple protocols, allowing fast charging of mobile devices (MD) that support fast charging or D+/D- protocols, and automatically distinguishing between different protocols. iW780 is located on the secondary side of the AC/DC power supply, allowing the adapter to be configured for multiple levels of output voltage and current.




140W power adapter solution






In the 140W power adapter solution, the TP65H150G4LSG power device, PFC controller R2A20133DSP, digital AC/DC controller iW9801, optically coupled isolator PS2381-1, digital synchronous rectification controller iW610 and protocol IC iW780 are used.

The R2A20133DSP uses critical conduction mode for power factor correction, achieving high efficiency and low switching noise through zero current switching. Since zero current passes through the GND current detection, there is no need for a ZCD auxiliary winding. In addition, the R2A20133D has built-in feedback loop open circuit detection, dual-mode overvoltage protection and overcurrent protection functions, and only a few external components are required to form a high-reliability power supply system.


The iW9801 integrates Renesas' patented adaptive zero voltage switching (ZVS) technology to provide ultra-small, lightweight, low-cost, and easy-to-carry power for smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, and other portable products. The device operates at a high switching frequency, so the size of the transformer and passive components is smaller, and supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 and other RapidCharge protocols with programmable power, with an output power of up to 100W.
