Arm joins hands with MediaTek and vivo to enable next-generation AI smartphone user experience

With the advent of the era of artificial intelligence (AI), mobile phones are becoming more intelligent, user experience is becoming more immersive, and consumers' demand for mobile phone computing power is also increasing. In response, we announced the launch of the Arm Terminal Compute Subsystem (CSS) , which not only has the advantages of the Armv9 architecture, but also has the performance, efficiency and accessibility to provide excellent AI experience, and can support our partners to build chip solutions based on the Arm architecture more easily and quickly.

AI enhances the generation of text, images, audio, and video, and provides dynamic and immersive gaming environments. Arm Endpoint CSS combined with Arm Cortex-X925 reduces the time to first token response by 46%, while the Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU also improves AI/ML performance by 36% compared to its previous generation. Ecosystem collaboration raises the bar for new AI smartphone experiences and will redefine the way we live, work, and play. To ensure an ideal user experience, we recently announced a joint lab with vivo to promote deep technical collaboration in the future. This collaboration effectively combines vivo's deep understanding of the use cases and features required by today's consumers with Arm's high-performance, energy-efficient computing platform, allowing us to bring a compelling user experience on vivo's flagship device.

Among them, vivo's new X200 series flagship smartphone is an example of the strong alliance of the ecosystem. It uses MediaTek's new Dimensity 9400 system-on-chip (SoC) based on the latest Armv9 technology. The Arm-based Dimensity 9400 brings PC-level performance to the new generation of flagship smartphones with advanced performance, energy efficiency, and outstanding AI and multimedia functions.

Arm Cortex-X925 achieves superb IPC performance

The core highlight of Dimensity 9400 is that it is equipped with Cortex-X925, which is our most powerful Cortex-X CPU to date. Compared with the previous generation, the IPC performance of Cortex-X925 has increased by 15%, which is enough to ensure that Dimensity 9400 is not afraid of even the most demanding tasks. The resulting improvements include faster response speed of AI applications, smoother AAA gaming experience, more sensitive application operation and consistent high energy efficiency. Dimensity 9400 has a 40% improvement in energy efficiency over the previous generation.

For a variety of smartphone workloads

Big-core Armv9 CPU cluster

The Dimensity 9400 uses TSMC's advanced N3E process technology and is equipped with multiple Armv9.2 CPUs in a large core cluster, including one Cortex-X925, three Cortex-X4, and four Cortex-A720. Compared with the previous generation, the Dimensity 9400 has a 35% increase in single-threaded performance and a 28% increase in sustained multi-threaded performance. As a result, it is suitable for all types of workloads on smartphones, whether it is a "burst" workload that requires peak performance (such as app launch) or a sustained workload that requires both high performance and high energy efficiency (such as gaming and video playback).

Armv9 Architecture Basics

The Dimensity 9400 uses the Armv9 CPU design, and the core of the latter lies in the SVE2 architecture function . The SVE2 architecture uses new dedicated vector instructions, which are ideal for accelerating key smartphone workloads and applications. SVE2 can increase the HDR video decoding speed by about 10%, allowing users to enjoy longer battery life when watching videos on demand on mainstream applications, while also improving the performance of computational photography algorithms by 20%, allowing higher quality photos to be taken on mobile devices.

Advanced gaming performance and

Accelerating AI experience

In terms of graphics processing, by integrating the Immoralis-G925 GPU, the Dimensity 9400 has a 41% improvement in peak performance and a 44% reduction in power consumption over the previous generation, ensuring that users can enjoy an immersive visual experience and seamless multitasking without compromising battery life, while also providing better acceleration capabilities for AI use cases such as image classification, natural language processing, and speech-to-text.

Immortalis-G925 also drives improvements to ray tracing content on mobile devices, increasing the Dimensity 9400’s ray tracing performance by 40% over the previous generation, resulting in a more realistic, higher-quality mobile gaming experience.

Software helps unleash AI and gaming performance

Arm, MediaTek and vivo have also collaborated extensively in areas beyond hardware innovation, working together to optimize hardware and software to achieve ideal performance. End users will experience these performance enhancements firsthand on the vivo X200 series flagship smartphones, such as faster response times for web applications.

In terms of gaming, we also demonstrated the performance advantages of Arm ASR (Arm ASR) through our collaboration with MediaTek . Arm ASR is an excellent open source solution that can improve the resolution of mobile visual and gaming content on mobile devices based on the Dimensity series. After enabling Arm ASR, the GPU's gaming performance is greatly improved, saving power and extending gaming time.




Arm ASR is now available as an early access plugin for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. The video above shows the improvements that can be achieved by enabling Arm ASR, which also uses Unreal Engine’s desktop renderer, giving developers unparalleled performance optimization opportunities.


At the same time, Arm is committed to working extensively across its software ecosystem to ensure that developers get the performance they need and create a new wave of amazing AI applications. To this end, we launched Arm Kleidi , which provides developers with an easy way to get ideal performance on Arm CPUs. We have integrated the world's popular AI frameworks (including PyTorch , MediaPipe , and Tencent Hunyuan Large Model) to fully demonstrate the value of Kleidi. These integrations accelerate the performance of mainstream large language models (LLM) (such as Meta Llama 3 ) on Arm-based mobile devices.
