The MAX17043/MAX17044 are compact, low-cost, host-side fuel gauges for lithium-ion (Li+) battery gauging in handheld and portable applications. The MAX17043 is configured for single-cell Li+ battery gauging, while the MAX17044 is configured for dual-cell 2S battery pack gauging. The MAX17043/MAX17044 use a proven Li+ battery modeling scheme, called ModelGauge™, to continuously track the relative state of charge (SOC) of the battery throughout the charge/discharge cycle. Unlike traditional fuel gauges, the ModelGauge algorithm eliminates the need for a battery relearn and an external current-sense resistor. The devices are temperature compensated to minimize µC-device interaction. A fast-startup mode provides an accurate initial estimate of the battery SOC. This feature allows the IC to be placed on the system side, reducing cost and power-chain constraints on the battery. Battery capacity measurements and estimates are available through the I²C interface. The MAX17043/MAX17044 are available in a 0.4mm-pitch, 9-bump UCSP™ package or a lead-free, 2mm x 3mm, 8-pin TDFN package.
