Low-input current FET operational amplifiers are universallyused to monitor photodetector, or more commonlyphotodiode currents. These photodetectors bridge the gapbetween a physical event, light, and electronics. There are avariety of amplifier configurations to select from and thechoice is based on noise, bandwidth, offset, and linearity. The most popular design approach is shown in Figure 1. Aconsiderable amount has been written on the performance ofthis traditional transimpedance amplifier. This topology hasdominated applications such as CT scanners, star-trackinginstruments, electron microscopes, etc., where a light-tovoltageconversion is required.
