In order to simulate the assembly construction process of engineering structures, a virtual assembly engine OpenWorld was designed and implemented. This paper discusses the entity hierarchy modeling and model support system used by the engine, proposes a rendering method that divides the scene into a world scene and an independent scene collection, and designs and implements a set of editable XML animation format tags. The virtual assembly software designed using this engine has successfully guided the assembly of engineering equipment and reduced misoperations during the assembly process. In this paper, the entity hierarchy modeling and model supporting system in this engine are discussed. A new rendering mode is put forward, which divides the whole scene into two parts: the world scene and isolated scenes, and a set of editable XML tags about animation are designed. The virtual assembly software using this engine can give a successful instruction on equipment assembly and reduce errors in the assembly process.Key Words: Virtual Reality; Virtual Assembly; OpenGL; 3D Engine; Animation File Format
