A tapped coil Colpitts oscillator can be used in Q1, providing 4 tuning ranges, namely 1.7-3.1MHz, 3.0-5.6MHz, 5.0-12MHz and 11.5-31MHz. The Zener diode in Q1 can be used to reduce the operating voltage of the oscillator. A small value capacitor is used in C5 to ensure optical coupling into the tuned circuit .
