ST and Semikron cooperate to develop modules for high-power applications [Copy link]

Semikron and power semiconductor company STMicroelectronics are collaborating to develop and market power modules for industrial equipment, consumer products and automotive electronics, assembling ST's most advanced power ICs in Semikron's SEMITOP? power package. The two companies have agreed to combine their complementary capabilities to provide reliable and cost-effective power solutions, develop new module product ranges and expand their respective market share. The

joint project creates new opportunities for traditional power components such as IGBTs and MOSFETs, including ST's unique ESBT? (Emitter Switched Bipolar Transistor) components. ESBT combines power MOSFET and power bipolar transistor structures and focuses on cost-effectiveness, high voltage capabilities and high switching frequency.

SEMITOP? allows the integration of several chips in one package, such as IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors), diodes and input bridge rectifiers. Package-level integration technology helps reduce the number of components and board space of discrete solutions, while ensuring excellent connectivity and inherent reliability of the module. Due to the use of advanced manufacturing processes and materials, such as DBC (direct copper) ceramic substrates and internal germanium layer technology, the new power module has excellent thermal management and resistance to external high temperatures and mechanical stress. The new

integrated power module developed by ST and Semikron is positioned in various market segments and applications, such as welding machines, UPS, home appliances, motor drives and switching power supplies to meet the growing demand for higher integration and reliability of power platforms in these markets. The new integrated module

will begin mass production in the second quarter of 2006, and ST and Semikron will carry out marketing activities through their own independent channels to ensure that there is a dual source of supply in the market to better provide customers with these products.
