Matter: Why is it needed? [Copy link]

Smart home devices made by different companies don’t necessarily work together.
One brand’s smart home assistant may not work with a specific brand of smart bulbs, which means you can’t turn on your smart lights with a voice command.
This leaves customers with two options, one is to choose smart home products that individually best suit their needs but don’t necessarily work together,
and the other is that they can buy all smart home products from a specific brand so that all devices work together in one ecosystem.
For example, Apple HomeKit products.
However, Matter solves all of the above problems.
Matter-certified products work together seamlessly, even if they are from different brands.
This means that, as a consumer, you don’t have to stick to one brand for all your smart home devices.
With Matter, you can now have Philips Hue lights work with Apple smart home products.
In addition, Matter allows users to control all IoT devices from a single app.
This means that devices set up in Google Home will also appear in the Samsung SmartThings app
and vice versa, so users no longer have to remember which app controls the lights and which app controls the smart speaker.
Matter: How It Works
The underlying network technologies of Matter are Wi-Fi and Thread.
Wi-Fi enables Matter devices to interact over a high-bandwidth local network and allows smart home devices to communicate with the cloud.
Thread provides an energy-efficient and highly reliable mesh network in the home. It protects data cryptographically and is highly stable.
If one of your smart home devices stops working, the network will adjust and continue to operate without it.
Matter: Compatible Devices
Smart home device manufacturers need Matter certification to make their devices compatible.
Once certified, existing smart home devices can be upgraded through software updates.
Currently, the certification applies to a variety of common smart home products, including smart light bulbs, smart plugs and switches, heating and cooling equipment, curtains and shades, door locks, media devices including TVs.
Other products, such as security cameras, will have to wait for the next iteration of the standard.
Matter will also support smartphone apps such as the Google Home app and the Apple Home app.
