At Lei Jun's annual speech on August 11 this year, Xiaomi released a real-life video of its autonomous driving technology road testing, and stated that Xiaomi's autonomous driving technology has entered the testing phase. The first phase plans to have 140 test vehicles, which will be tested across the country in succession.
Today, Xiaomi has made new progress in car manufacturing. According to Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter said that due to the delay in Xiaomi's obtaining a license to independently produce cars, Xiaomi is negotiating with BAIC Group on matters related to the joint production of electric vehicles. Currently, the two parties are exploring ways to cooperate, including Xiaomi directly purchasing Beijing Hyundai's second factory, which has a car production license.
The report said that although Beijing Hyundai's second factory is relatively old and needs major upgrades to produce electric vehicles, BAIC Blue Valley, a subsidiary of BAIC Group, may cooperate with Xiaomi and be responsible for the production of Xiaomi cars.
According to 21 Finance, a person from BAIC BluePark's investor relations department responded that they have not received any definite news. According to the Daily Economic News, BAIC Group said: "I have not heard of this matter."
On August 17, 36Kr learned from an insider that Xiaomi Motors has finalized two main battery suppliers, namely CATL and BYD's Fudi Battery, both of which are also the leading battery manufacturers in the domestic new energy field.
On the same day, Lei Jun demonstrated the usage of the smart summoning of Xiaomi's self-driving car on his Douyin account. Lei Jun clicked the one-click summoning of the relevant App on his mobile phone, and the Xiaomi self-driving car in the parking lot automatically drove from B2 on the second underground floor to the exit on the first floor.
In Lei Jun's new book "Xiaomi Entrepreneurship Thinking", Lei Jun said that for Xiaomi, making cars is the general trend and there is no other choice. At the same time, Lei Jun hopes to first make a good car that can compete with all current products of the same level, and then consider the subversive part.
Founded in 1958, BAIC Group owns well-known enterprises and R&D institutions such as Beijing Auto, Changhe Auto, BAIC New Energy, Beijing Hyundai, and Beijing Benz. In terms of products, the new HI version of the Alpha S under BAIC Blue Valley was launched on May 7 this year. The car is equipped with Hongmeng car machine OS and is priced from 397,900 yuan.
Xiaomi officially announced its entry into the car manufacturing industry on March 30 last year, with an initial investment of 10 billion yuan and an expected investment of 10 billion US dollars in the next 10 years.
At the end of November last year, Xiaomi signed a contract with the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone Management Committee to build a headquarters base for its automotive business and a sales and R&D headquarters in Yizhuang, and to build a car factory with an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. The announcement at the time stated that the factory would be built in two phases, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles in the first and second phases respectively, and that Xiaomi's first car is expected to roll off the assembly line and achieve mass production in 2024.
