『What is the function of R1? 』

This diagram may be wrong. Q4 should not use a PNP tube. If Q4 is a PNP tube, then R1 will be short-circuited by Q4's collector junction (in the forward direction). Q4's emitter junction is in the reverse state, and the signal cannot reach the base of Q2Q3.

The collector and emitter of Q4 are drawn in reverse. R1 is the static bias resistor of Q4, and when there is no input on the R2 side, Q4 is guaranteed to be cut off.
