The question about free counting and reload counting seems to have been asked by the original poster when he was asking about the 51 single-chip microcomputer.
Free counting means that when the count reaches the final value, an interrupt is generated and a carry is performed. Reloading means that when the count reaches the final value, an interrupt is generated and the initial value is reloaded.
