Will voice control become our primary user interface? [Copy link]

Voice control and voice interfaces have begun to permeate all cutting-edge consumer device categories. Advances in speech recognition algorithms and AI accelerator hardware mean that the technology can be used even in power- and cost-constrained applications, such as smart home devices.

From a user perspective, the drivers behind voice control of smart home devices are clear.

“Ease of use and convenience are the main drivers right now,” said Alireza Kenarsari-Anhari, CEO of PicoVoice. “It’s easy to imagine you yelling at your home office coffee maker from your desk when you want a cup of coffee, or giving orders to your tumble dryer while holding a basket of wet clothes.

Kenarsari-Anhari: “I see voice as a development interface — if you can build your GUI or website without coding, maybe using WordPress, the next step is to build voice interfaces in a similar way. Shepherd is empowering product managers and UX designers to prototype and iterate quickly, but our goal is to expand its target user base.”

While it is entirely possible to develop natural language processing models and implement them without specialized software, this approach is not for everyone.

“Of course you can — Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft have all done it, it’s a matter of whether the company has the resources, the commitment to build an organization around it, and the ability to wait a few years.”

Future Trends

In an interview last summer, Syntiant CEO Kurt Busch said voice is becoming the preferred interface for the next generation of technology users.

Kurt Busch describes this future through the lens of his youngest child, who is too young to read but not write, yet uses the voice function of his smartphone to text with friends.

Busch: “His older brothers and sisters would text, but his generation had cell phones a few years before them, and over time, for his generation and younger generations, their default interface is to talk to it.”

Busch believes voice will be the "touch screen of the future," with on-device processing delivering fast, responsive interfaces first on devices with a keyboard or mouse, and then in white goods.

As AI technology continues to advance, conversational AI is becoming a key tool for freeing your hands and improving productivity. Will voice eventually become the default user interface for most consumer electronics?

It certainly seems to be the case. This is made possible by the emergence of advanced, efficient AI voice control algorithms that enable developers to easily integrate voice, as well as a growing ecosystem of energy- and cost-effective hardware solutions.

I never cared whether the voice control was stupid or not. I just felt that talking to a machine was too weird and I couldn't accept it...   Details Published on 2021-4-6 13:47

It seems possible, but for me, I am not interested. The Xiaoai speaker has been gathering dust for several months and I don't want to use it.

Moreover, our company also makes local voice recognition chips, and we have never used voice to do anything.

I was crazy about Tmall Genie for a while, and I found it and connected it a few days ago. I don’t know who secretly unplugged it for me.  Details Published on 2021-4-1 17:47

I was also curious about it. When I first got it, I just used it to ask some questions, but then I forgot about it. It was always plugged in, and sometimes it woke up by mistake, which scared me.  Details Published on 2021-4-1 19:22

I think that's the case. My child can command Tmall Genie and Niu Tingting to play stories for him.

I hope to launch a specific human voice recognition chip. I bought a Tmall Genie. Anyone can control it . Every time someone tells it to shut up.

Haha, Tmall Genie must be such a big existence. If it were a living person, with the power unplugged, told to shut up, and to scare people from time to time, it would probably go mentally disturbed.

Voice control works for kids, but not so well for adults.
