Recently, Qorvo announced the launch of a new generation of multi-time programmable power management IC (PMIC), which is optimized for high performance and compact design. Everyone knows that Qorvo's best field should be RF, but since it began to acquire other companies, it has also begun to move into the power supply and motor control fields. Let's take a look at this chip.
The Qorvo ACT88327/8/9/1 constant on-time (COT) PMIC family helps accelerate time to market by providing design flexibility for a wide range of applications, from SSD cards, computer vision (such as security cameras) and routers to low-power mobile applications (LPDDR5), home control and voice assistance devices. The same base component can be used in a variety of different end products by simply changing the PMIC configuration without the need for special software or firmware. Manufacturers can debug designs and change settings in real time without changing any external components.
The new generation of PMICs integrates 5 voltage rails, 1 sequencer and 7 configurable general purpose IOs (GPIOs) in a very small 2.18 x 2.58 mm 30-pin WLCSP package. Each PMIC includes 3 DC/DC buck converters with built-in power FETs and 2 low dropout regulators (LDOs). All of these can be easily configured through the I2C interface. Other configurations include:
-
Buck1 and LDO1 can be configured as load switches
-
Buck1 is a peak current mode fixed frequency DC/DC step-down converter optimized for output voltage as close to the input voltage
-
Buck1 switches at 1.125 MHz or 2.25 MHz and requires only three small components to operate.
-
Buck2 and Buck3 use an asynchronous constant on-time (ACOT) control architecture to optimize load transient response with smaller output capacitors
-
All Bucks are used with a 0.47uH inductor and require only three small components to operate.
-
LDO1 can support up to 390mA and 1A current in bypass mode
-
Both LDOs require only small ceramic capacitors
The ACT88329 is the first integrated PMIC with this configuration, capable of supporting output voltages as low as 0.5V in low-output applications such as LPDDR5.
The ACT88327/8/9/1 PMIC series has multiple GPIOs that can be configured for different functions and purposes, such as interrupt, reset, external enable, external PG, regulator on/off, DVS, VID, sleep/deep sleep mode, power recovery, and buttons. In addition, they support two-level input voltage monitoring. Other configurable options in the PMIC series include start-up time, slew rate, system-level timing, switching frequency, sleep mode, and operating mode. The proprietary ACOT control mode ensures excellent performance at lower output voltages.
“Qorvo continues to advance small form factor, multi-time programmable PMICs, pushing the boundaries of integration and configurability,” said David Briggs, senior director of Qorvo’s Programmable Power Management business unit. “This enables our customers to reduce design cycle times and bring new products to market faster.”
What do you think after reading the above introduction? Programmability is indeed a highlight, which brings engineers a lot of design options they like, and also brings customers the choice of preferences. What do you think of this chip? If you want to know more, you can click to read.
