Since 2019, Henan, Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Jiangxi, Chongqing and other places have introduced action plans or planning schemes to support the implementation of the 5G industry, and the 5G commercial era has officially arrived. The impact of 5G on the PCB industry is mainly reflected in the fields of communications, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, etc., especially in the construction of 5G base stations, the use of 5G mobile phones, and the application of autonomous driving and new energy vehicles.
1. Compared with 4G, 5G has three main characteristics:
1. High data rate:
The data transmission rate of 5G network is much higher than that of cellular network. Its ultra-large bandwidth transmission capacity can ensure no lag even when watching 4K high-definition videos, 360-degree panoramic videos and VR virtual reality experiences.
2. Low network latency:
The 5G network delay is less than 1 millisecond, while 4G is 30-70 milliseconds. Although 4G is already very fast, sometimes there will be delays when playing games, but as long as 5G comes out, there will be zero delay! This means that there will be no errors in the transmission of information. Not only will the game not be stuck, but driverless cars will also become a part of daily life!
3. Large-scale Internet of Things
This is the most amazing thing about 5G. Within a radius of one kilometer, it can support the simultaneous use of 1 million devices without any reduction in network speed. This means that the furniture, electrical appliances and robots in our lives can be connected through 5G and can be controlled with just a mobile phone!
2. Communications
In the communications field, PCB is mainly used in transmission networks, wireless networks, data communications and fixed broadband equipment, especially in the construction of 5G base stations, which will drive the rapid growth of the PCB industry.
Features of 5G base stations:
The characteristics of 5G base stations are high frequency and high speed, and they require the use of millimeter wave bands with higher frequencies and wider bandwidths (frequency ranges from 30GHz to 300GHz).
1. Wide spectrum can greatly increase channel capacity and is suitable for high-speed multimedia transmission services;
2. High reliability, high frequency makes it less susceptible to interference, can better resist the influence of rainy weather, and provide a stable transmission channel;
3. Good directivity. Millimeter waves are greatly absorbed by various suspended particles in the air, making the transmission beam narrower, increasing the difficulty of eavesdropping, and suitable for short-distance point-to-point communication;
4. The wavelength is extremely short, and the required antenna size is very small, making it easy to integrate a large-scale antenna array in a smaller space.
According to CCID Consulting's forecast, there will be about 4.75 million 5G macro base stations in 2026. In terms of the number of small base stations, the number of small base stations is about twice that of macro base stations, that is, 9.5 million. The total number of macro base stations and small base stations exceeds 14 million. Such a large number of base stations will bring a broad market space for PCB.
3. Automotive electronics
In the future, with the advent of the 5G era, emerging demands in downstream fields such as automotive electronics, wearable devices, industrial control, and medical devices will explode, and the PCB industry will usher in new growth points. Especially prominent is automotive electronics:
Autonomous driving has extremely high requirements for low latency in communication, requiring a minimum latency of 3ms and a maximum bandwidth of 1Gbps, which can only be met by 5G. At present, the number of PCB products used in a mid-to-high-end car model has reached about 30 pieces, and the demand for automotive PCB products is increasing day by day.
Compared with traditional cars, new energy vehicles are more complex in structure and more electronic. The cost of electronic devices in traditional cars accounts for about 25% of the total cost of the vehicle, while this proportion in new energy vehicles is 45%-65%.
As environmental protection requirements become increasingly stringent, the automotive PCB industry will also benefit directly, with huge room for future growth.
4. 5G mobile phone
Since 5G mobile phones use different networks than previous 4G mobile phones, the hardware on the mobile phones needs to be updated, which will drive consumers' demand for replacement phones. Driven by the rapid development of 5G mobile phones, the mobile phone PCB industry will develop rapidly.
Canalys predicts that by 2020, 5G mobile phones will account for 17.5% of the Chinese mobile phone market, and by 2023, this proportion will climb to 62.7%. By 2023, global 5G mobile phone shipments will surpass 4G mobile phone shipments to reach 1.9 billion units, with a compound annual growth rate of 179.9%.
Summary: Benefiting from the rapid growth of global server shipments, the global PCB output value in 2019 was about US$61.34 billion, a slight decrease of 1.7% compared with US$63.6 billion in 2018. The Chinese market performed well. In 2019, the output value of China's PCB industry was about US$32.942 billion, a slight increase of 0.7% compared with US$32.6 billion in 2018, accounting for about 53.7% of the global market, firmly sitting on the NO1 throne.
Although the 2020 epidemic has had a great impact on all walks of life, the PCB industry has benefited from the development of 5G infrastructure, the Internet of Things and consumer electronics, and the PCB market will maintain steady growth.
According to Prismark's forecast, the PCB industry is expected to grow at a rate of 2% in 2020, and will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5% between 2020 and 2024. By 2024, the global PCB industry output value will reach US$75.846 billion. PCB will have a huge market in the future.
