Comparison of main control with storage chip SD NAND and eMMC [Copy link]

Recently, we have come into contact with some solution providers who originally planned to use eMMC, but always felt dissatisfied. Later, we had in-depth communication with them. What kind of eMMC do they really want? The answers they gave include: the smallest eMMC; the most convenient eMMC for welding; the smallest capacity eMMC; the eMMC with the least pins; the eMMC with the lowest power consumption; the eMMC with the longest erase life; the eMMC using SLC NAND wafers; the eMMC with the most stable performance, etc. We analyzed these requirements and felt that SD NAND (also known as SMD T card) is more suitable for these customers. SD NAND and eMMC are similar to brothers in architecture, both of which have built-in NAND Flash wafers + NAND Flash controllers + Firmware. So what are the differences between them? If we list the features of SD NAND and eMMC here, everyone will understand.

Regarding their size and packaging, here is a comparison of the actual product pictures (from left to right)
SLC NAND wafer, SD NAND (WSON-8, 6*8mm), T card (11*15mm), eMMC (BGA153, 11.5*13mm) In terms of cost, since SD NAND has a smaller capacity, the cost is lower. For some customers, storage capacity > 8GB is not needed, and the cost of using eMMC will be higher. It can be seen that when customers have the following requirements, it is more appropriate to choose SD NAND than eMMC: 1: Small size is required. SD NAND is 6*8mm; eMMC is 11.5*13mm; 2: Small capacity is required. SD NAND is 128MB-1GB; eMMC capacity ≥8GB; 3: Long erase and write life and erase resistance are required. SD NAND is a built-in SLC NAND Flash wafer, and the number of erases can reach 100,000 times; eMMC uses MLC wafers, with an erase life of about 3,000 times (non-mainstream), and TLC wafers, with an erase life of about 500-1000 times (mainstream). 4: Easy welding and fewer pins are required. SD NAND WSON-8/8pin, can be manually welded; eMMC is 153 Ball, BGA package, and only experts can manually weld. If you are interested in SD NAND, you can comment below at any time. Welcome everyone

I have searched for some information about SD NAND on the Internet before. The CS brand SD NAND information released by Leilong is very attentive, and the information and articles are all original. Later, I applied for samples and consulted with both products. The reply from CS was relatively clear and the supporting small parts were also complete. I heard that their boss used to be a technician. MK's response to technical questions was very vague, and the performance of the product was inconsistent with the promise in the specification. Later, I saw that in addition to SD NAND, MK also engaged in power protection devices, eMMC, UFS, and SSD products. They didn't make SD NAND products carefully, but they also engaged in so many other things, which gave the impression of a shell company.   Details Published on 2019-6-26 14:17

As the name suggests, SD NAND is also a standard SD interface, so its essence is the same as that of an SD card. The reason why it is very popular now is only because it is different from an SD card in form. It is very small, equivalent to one-fifth to one-fifth of an SD card. The main thing is that it can be directly mounted, so its speed, performance and size are very advantageous. It may be used in some security, automotive electronics, smart wearables, and some small and flexible electronic products. However, there are not many companies doing this at present, and the more famous one is MK.

In fact, SD NAND has been widely used for a long time. For example, TWS headphones, Apple, Harman and other companies have been using this thing for a long time. It’s just that many domestic electronic manufacturers have begun to add this to their products to increase functional requirements. This concept is so popular now. The size of SD NAND is much smaller than that of SD cards, so there are still requirements for the level of craftsmanship. Therefore, it is also very important to choose a brand. The more famous one is MK, which is called Mi Ke Fang De in Chinese. This factory is in Taiwan and the wafers used are all from big brands. You still need to be cautious about the remaining unknown ones.

I would like to ask how fast the erase and write speed of SD NAND is. Is there any relevant information?
