Why did companies like Texas Instruments disappear from the mobile phone chip field? [Copy link]

This post was last edited by alan000345 on 2018-10-23 10:18 In the early days of smartphones, TI, Nvidia, and even later Intel were all leaders in the IC industry, but these big guys have successively withdrawn from this field. Do you know why? Here I have to first introduce what SoC is? SoC is the abbreviation of System on Chip, also known as system on chip, which is a micro system. If the central processing unit (CPU) is the brain, then SoC is a system that includes the brain, heart, eyes and hands. In addition to the CPU, a SoC also includes important modules such as BP (baseband), GPU (graphics processor), DSP (digital signal processor), and ISP (image signal processor). These modules manage, organize, coordinate, and distribute tasks of each module through complex heterogeneous computing systems to quickly and effectively solve problems and balance performance and power consumption. Next, we have to talk about baseband Baseband is usually a circuit in a mobile phone, responsible for completing the demodulation, descrambling, despreading and decoding of wireless signals in the mobile network, and passing the final decoded digital signal to the upper processing system for processing, which can be understood as a communication module. ST-Ericsson, a mobile chip joint venture between Ericsson, the former leader in the field of communication equipment, and IC giant STMicroelectronics, also withdrew after a loss of 2.7 billion US dollars, which is enough to show that baseband is not easy to make. Huawei started out in communications, but it has done a good job in baseband. It can be seen that Huawei is really a good Chinese company that we should be proud of. Compared with those Chinese companies with the American "Silicon Valley" brand, it is even more iron-clad. Always support Huawei. Chip industry giants like Intel have also failed in their attempts to enter the mobile field. In order to make up for the weakness of baseband, they also acquired Infineon. Apple's recent lawsuit with Qualcomm is hot because of the issue of patent fees. This patent fee is mainly for the communication patents of the baseband part. After years of development, Apple has gradually turned from CPU to GPU into independent research and development, but the baseband is still not its own. The fundamental reason is that it is difficult to make and the patent barriers are too high. Having said so much, now it is clear why TI, Nvidia, and even later Intel have withdrawn from the mobile phone chip field? Because they all encountered a crucial problem - baseband. Qualcomm swept the mobile processor market with the advantage of baseband. Many people even teased Qualcomm's SoC as buying a baseband and giving away a CPU, which shows the decisive role of baseband. Am I right? Let's come and discuss it. What do you think of Huawei's baseband? With the development of 5G, will big companies like TI return to the baseband mobile phone field?

Therefore, we must have core intellectual property rights so that we will not be controlled by others. Apple is so powerful, but it is also controlled by Qualcomm. Our country should have more companies like Huawei that can have independent intellectual property rights.  Details Published on 2019-1-19 17:28

Good article, thumbs up. Other companies’ withdrawals are mainly due to patents. Is the technology really that advanced?

Nowadays, mobile phone chips compete on performance and cost. TI is more inclined to industrial applications, stable, and expensive

TI is really good in the industry, so it probably doesn't care about the mobile phone field anymore.  Details Published on 2018-10-23 18:37

When writing code, you also need to look at the big picture. You need to see through the focus and advantages of each chip manufacturer. I feel that the elimination of electronics is very serious. If you are not careful, you will be at the top, and if you are not careful again, you will sink. Who will decide the ups and downs? I don't know either, haha.  Details Published on 2018-10-23 18:39

I think that with the development of 5G, TI will not give up the fat piece of meat of mobile phone chips. In addition, the patents are also limited in time. It is very likely that they will come back. However, TI products are really good, while ST products can only be used as toys. The industrial reliability is still much worse. Some NXP products can compete with TI, but NXP changes too frequently, and many products are difficult to buy.

The key point is intellectual property. Whoever can set the standards owns the market.

Huawei is very powerful. TI will not enter the market because there are so many patent barriers. Secondly, it will have to divert its attention and invest a lot of money in baseband research and development, and it may not succeed. It is better to expand its current products and businesses.

The investment is too big! The key is that there is no money to be made!
