Advanced factory automation solutions such as Industry 4.0 require a large number of smart sensors, which are usually controlled by IO-Link® to achieve point-to-point serial communication between sensors and controllers (hosts). As a leading supplier of IO-Link sensor transceivers and host transceiver ICs, Maxim also provides complete reference design solutions to help customers improve their time to market. These proven designs cover all hardware and software requirements required to comply with the IO-Link standard. A complete reference design is provided on a 30mm x 7.5mm printed circuit board (PCB), including all ICs and external protection components such as TVS diodes.
Maxim Integrated and Technologie Management Gruppe Technologie und Engineering (TMG TE) worked closely together to design the MAXREFDES171# reference design, which is fully compliant with the IO-Link standard version 1.1/1.0. The MAXREFDES171# design includes the industry-standard MAX22513 IO-Link device transceiver; the MAX32660 ultra-low-power 16-bit microcontroller using the TMG TE IO-Link device protocol stack; and the commercial VL53L1 distance sensor. Figure 1 shows the system block diagram.
