Overview
unPhone is not a replacement for your phone, but it has the potential to replace some of the sledgehammers we currently use to crack nuts (and give you more control over your data). unPhone is open source hardware and open source software, and comes with a 300-page IoT textbook. It supports teaching and prototyping, and is being developed in parallel with a control and monitoring system for sustainable farming in aquaculture (WaterElf). It is an IoT development platform developed by the University of Sheffield, Pimoroni and BitFIXit, and is based on one of the simplest and most popular connected microcontrollers (ESP32S3), and adds: LCD touchscreen for easy debugging and creating UIs LoRaWAN free radio communications (plus the ESP32's excellent wifi and Bluetooth support) LiPo battery management and USB charging Vibration motor for notifications Infrared LED for secretly turning off the cafe TV Accelerometer SD card reader Power and reset buttons Rugged case Supports expansion board with two Featherwing sockets and prototyping area Open source firmware compatible with Arduino IDE, PlatformIO and Espressif's IDF development framework Programming in C++ or CircuitPython LVGL graphics support
