Uses the UCC28180 active power factor correction (PFC) controller, which operates in continuous conduction mode (CCM) to provide high power factor, low current distortion for the boost pre-regulator in the AC - DC front-end and excellent voltage regulation. This controller is suitable for universal AC input systems ranging from 100 watts to several kilowatts, and the switching frequency is programmable from 18kHz to 250kHz to easily support power MOSFET and IGBT switching. The integrated 1.5A and 2A (SRC-SNK) peak gate drive outputs are internally clamped to 15.2V (typ), allowing fast turn-on and turn-off and easy management of external power switches without the use of snubber circuits.
By using average current mode control, the UCC28180 achieves low-distortion wave shaping of the input current without the need for input line sensing, thereby reducing external component count. In addition, the controller's reduced current-sensing threshold facilitates the use of low-value shunt resistors to reduce power dissipation, which is especially important for high-power systems. To achieve low current distortion, the UCC28180 controller also features an adjusted current loop regulator circuit that eliminates associated errors.
