This application note describes a powered device (PD) module in an IEEE 802.3af-compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) system. This module is based on the MAX5941B PoE interface/PWM controller and provides PD with signal detection, configurable classification signal (optional), programmable undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and isolation switch with programmable inrush current control.
The MAX5941B PD module is mounted on a 12cm² PCB and includes a hot-swappable power switch, DC-DC converter, and a pair of ORing diode bridges that are compatible with external 12V adapters. In short, it provides all the features needed to build a DC-DC, fixed frequency, isolated PD power supply for applications such as IP phones, wireless access nodes, and security cameras.
