A battery pack with 4 to 6 strings can achieve fast charging with a buck-boost or buck-boost circuit. In addition, the introduction of USB PD3.1 supports 48V output voltage and 240W output power. With a suitable buck-boost chip, outdoor power supplies can achieve higher-power PD fast charging.

Lithium battery protection chips are used in multi-string battery packs. They need to detect the voltage of each battery in the battery pack independently to provide overcharge and over-discharge protection for the battery. When the voltage of a single battery cell and the total voltage of the battery pack are abnormal, or the temperature is abnormal, the connection between the battery and the circuit needs to be cut off in time to protect the safety of the battery pack and electrical equipment.

Currently, six manufacturers including Silergy, Jewatt, Chuangxinwei, Ingenic, Yutai and Saiwei have launched 30 lithium battery protection chips, covering the application of 3-18 battery strings, and all are suitable for lithium-ion battery packs and lithium iron phosphate battery packs. Among them, 4-string lithium battery protection chips are suitable for 300-600W outdoor power products, and more than 4 strings of lithium battery protection chips can be used for outdoor power supplies with a power of more than 1000W.

According to data from research institutions, the market size of the portable energy storage power supply industry has reached 19.5 billion yuan in 2020, and is expected to exceed 28 billion yuan by 2025. Silergy has launched three multi-string lithium battery protection chips with built-in balancing function, namely SY68920 supporting 3-6 strings of batteries, SY68930 supporting 6-12 strings of batteries, and SY68940 supporting 9-18 strings of batteries, which can meet the needs of system applications such as power tools, electric bicycles, and lithium battery energy storage.

Silergy's series battery monitoring solution supports lithium battery pack discharge overcurrent, discharge short circuit, battery pack single/total voltage undervoltage and overvoltage protection functions, and also supports the connection of secondary protection chips. In the event of a fault, the protection chip can output alarm signals in analog and digital modes. The built-in I2C interface of the protection chip supports access to the single cell voltage, total voltage, charge and discharge current and temperature parameters of the battery pack, and its functions are very comprehensive.

Silergy SY68920 is a protection chip suitable for 3-6 series lithium battery applications. The chip has a built-in ADC to measure battery voltage, battery pack or protection chip temperature. The chip has a built-in independent ADC to detect battery pack current. Using NMOS on the low side can reduce costs and improve protection board performance. The chip supports discharge overcurrent protection, discharge short circuit protection, battery undervoltage protection and battery overvoltage protection.

The chip integrates battery balancing control function and battery balancing MOS, supports alarm interrupt output, and has an I2C interface for outputting battery status information. It adopts QFN5*5-32 package.

Silergy SY68930 is suitable for 6-12 series lithium battery applications and uses QFN6*6-40 package. The chip integrates ADC to accurately measure battery voltage, battery pack or chip temperature, and is equipped with an independent internal ADC to measure battery pack current. The chip has multiple protection functions such as discharge overcurrent protection (OCD), discharge short circuit protection (SCD), overvoltage protection (OV), undervoltage protection (UV), etc.

Silergy SY68940 is suitable for 9-18 battery pack applications and uses QFN8*8-40 package. The chip has built-in ADC to measure battery voltage, battery pack or protection chip temperature. JW3312 is a protection chip that supports 3-5 lithium battery strings. It integrates a high-precision voltage detection circuit and supports overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, overheating and battery disconnection protection. JW3312 supports lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries, has 25mV overcharge voltage detection accuracy, 50mV over-discharge detection accuracy, built-in battery balancing function, and 3μA standby power consumption. JW3312 is available in TSSOP20 package, suitable for rechargeable lithium battery packs, power tools and UPS backup battery packs.

JW3313 is a protection chip that supports 3-series lithium batteries. The chip supports battery overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, battery temperature and open circuit detection. JW3313 supports lithium iron phosphate and lithium battery applications, has 25mV overcharge detection accuracy and 80mV over-discharge detection accuracy, has three-stage over-current protection, built-in high-precision battery temperature detection, supports battery overheating and over-cooling protection, and has 1.5μA standby power consumption. JW3313 uses MSOP10 package and supports rechargeable lithium battery packs, power tools and other applications.

JW3410

JW3410 is a secondary protection chip that supports 2 to 5 lithium battery strings. It integrates a high-precision voltage detection circuit for lithium battery overcharge protection. The built-in high-precision voltage detection circuit has a 20mV accuracy, supports lithium iron phosphate and lithium battery overvoltage protection, supports high-voltage lithium battery applications, and has different release thresholds and action delays.

JW3410 has an independent pin for overvoltage signal output. The chip automatically monitors the battery voltage. When overcharge or disconnection occurs, the control signal is output after a delay, which can be used to control the MOS tube or three-terminal fuse to cut off the circuit connection to ensure battery safety. JW3410 has a power consumption of 3μA and uses MSOP8 package. It is suitable for rechargeable lithium battery packs, power tools and laptop battery voltage monitoring.

The IP3254 battery protection chip from Ingenic uses a TSSOP16 package and supports lithium iron phosphate and lithium battery applications. Due to the switching characteristics, the heat and power loss generated by traditional linear balancing technology are greatly reduced; due to the higher balancing current not limited by package heat dissipation, the balancing time is also significantly shortened.

The ETA3001 consumes only 2uA of ultra-low current from the battery in standby mode, extending the storage time of the battery. The final balanced voltage of the two batteries is also very accurate, which improves the performance and life of the series-connected batteries. The ETA3001 can also be used for multiple cell stacks with an even number of cells. The ETA3001 has a protection function similar to pre-conditioning in battery charging, that is, when the voltage of one battery is significantly lower than that of the other, the balancing current is reduced to a safe level until the battery with the lower voltage is charged.
