Drag soldering of SMD components with a soldering iron is actually a more stable and efficient soldering method than a hot air gun. What is used is the fluidity of the solder after heating, supplemented by flux (rosin). The surface tension of the tin makes each solder joint full of tin, and the attention is focused on a row of solder joints instead of each pad one by one. When desoldering, you can easily pry off the SMD components on the four sides with a pair of sharp-nose tweezers.
