Chinese smartphone brands’ share of the Russian market surged in May as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd suspended sales in the country and Western sanctions weighed on the Russian economy.

Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi, Realme and Honor accounted for 42% of Russian smartphone sales in May 2022, up from 28% in the same period last year, according to data shared by mobile network MTS, Reuters reported.

South Korea's Samsung lost its position as the market leader, with its mobile phone sales falling to 14% from 28% in the same period last year, while Apple's market share fell from 12% to 9%.

MTS said overall smartphone sales fell 26% year-on-year as Western sanctions and supply chain disruptions hit Russia's consumer economy hard.
