According to MacRumors, citing TrendForce, Apple's next-generation A16 chip will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
TrendForce briefly mentioned in a report focused on global smartphone production that Apple plans to launch four new iPhone 14 models in the second half of 2022, but said only the Pro models will be equipped with Apple's latest processors.
On May 29, Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a roadmap claiming to be TSMC's release time on Twitter, showing that the N3 and N4P processes will not start mass production until 2023. Therefore, the iPhone 14 series can only use the N5P and N4 processes. The N4 process has no obvious improvement compared to the N5P, so it is more reasonable for Apple to choose N5P for the A16.
Guo Mingchi said that the performance and power saving improvements of A16 should be limited. Apple named the chip of iPhone 14 Pro A16 more for marketing purposes.
Mark Gurman said that "in addition to trying to make the Pro stand out," the ongoing chip shortage may lead Apple to decide to limit the latest chips to the iPhone 14 Pro models. This is different from Apple's current strategy of equipping all flagship iPhones with the same chip. For example, the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max are all equipped with the A15 chip.
