On March 30, DIGITIMES reported that in Omdia's "Semiconductor Industry Analysis for the Fourth Quarter of 2021", Samsung Electronics still maintained its first position in the semiconductor industry. In a year when the industry set a new record of more than US$500 billion in revenue, Intel barely maintained its position as the annual revenue leader.

Omdia said that the review of quarterly performance confirmed that Samsung maintained its top position in semiconductor company revenue in the fourth quarter of 2021, with revenue of $19.995 billion, while Intel's revenue was $19.976 billion. Samsung Electronics' sales in the third quarter of 2021 also surpassed Intel, which had the highest sales in the first two quarters of last year, becoming the world's largest semiconductor company.

Omdia pointed out that on an annual basis, Intel became the world's largest semiconductor company with $76.6 billion in revenue in 2021, accounting for 13% of global semiconductor revenue. It is worth noting that Intel's revenue growth in 2021 was almost the same as in 2020. In contrast, the revenue growth of the next nine largest semiconductor companies exceeded 15%.

Omdia said Samsung Electronics' revenue lagged behind Intel in 2021, with semiconductor revenue of $75.2 billion, accounting for 12.8% of the industry's revenue. Samsung Electronics has significantly narrowed the sales gap with Intel thanks to strong growth in the DRAM market (42% growth in 2021) and the NAND market (23% growth in 2021).

Omdia said that the total revenue of the semiconductor industry in 2021 was $586.8 billion, $100 billion higher than in 2018 ($484.7 billion). The semiconductor industry's revenue in 2021 increased by 24.2% year-on-year, second only to the highest revenue growth rate on record in 2010 (34.1%). According to Omdia data, the last quarter of 2021 was also the fifth consecutive quarter of record revenue for the industry, with a month-on-month increase of 3.6% to $159.1 billion.
