Apple announced last week that it will provide parts, tools and repair manuals to individual consumers, starting with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, called the "Self-Service Repair Program." The program will allow customers to obtain Apple original parts and tools to repair their devices themselves.
In an internal memo obtained by MacRumors, Apple provided more details about the program, including that repair manuals will be available on the Apple Support website and confirming that customers can check the ordering location before ordering self-service repair parts.
Apple's memo also said that its online parts store will be operated by an unspecified third party. While no official reason was provided, it would certainly be easier for Apple logistically to outsource the shipping and receiving of parts to customers.
In announcing the program last week, Apple said self-service repairs were for "technicians with knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices," adding that the initial phase of the program would focus on common repairs such as replacing an iPhone display, battery or camera.
Apple's self-repair program has been praised by supporters of the "right to repair" movement, but some questions remain. Apple said in the memo that it will share more details as the program rolls out.
