Thanks to new foldable devices launched by mobile phone manufacturers, global shipments of flexible AMOLED panels for foldable smartphones may exceed 12 million units by 2021.
Data from market research firm Digitimes Research show that global shipments of foldable smartphones increased more than fivefold to 2.8 million units in 2020, and corresponding shipments of flexible AMOLED panels also grew at a similar rate to 4.4 million units.
Sources estimate that the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic will help drive growth in demand for mobile phones, and shipments of foldable smartphones may grow to 7 million units in 2021, while shipments of AMOLED panels will exceed 12 million units.
As we all know, AMOLED has occupied a place in the market with its advantages of being thin, light, self-luminous, and flexible. A previous report by market research firm Omdia pointed out that AMOLED accounted for 29.4% of total smartphone display shipments in 2020, and this proportion is expected to increase to 40% by 2021. At the same time, in 2020, shipments of flexible OLEDs exceeded those of rigid OLEDs in smartphone screens.
