Recently, a diver salvaged an iPhone 11 from the bottom of a lake in British Columbia. The phone survived underwater for nearly 6 months.
Chilliwack freediver Clayton Helkenberg, who with his wife Heather makes a hobby of diving to the bottom of lakes to find lost items and clean up trash, revealed in a video posted Thursday that he had found an iPhone at the bottom of Harrison Lake.
While exploring the lake bed, Heather noticed the iPhone in the sediment, while Clayton found a flip phone, Clayton's find was badly damaged, but Heather's iPhone was in much better condition, Clayton said.
“I took it home, cleaned the dust off, and it turned on straight away, so it was really great,” Clayton said. Aside from a broken microphone and speaker issues, the iPhone survived the disaster largely unscathed.
After ejecting the SIM card and placing it in another device to contact the owner, it was returned to Vancouver resident Fateeh Ghodsi. The iPhone was reportedly dumped during a boat ride in September and contained photos of Ghodsi before he was dumped.
After receiving a text message from her old number, Ghodsi thought it was a prank by a friend but was later persuaded to go to Chilliwack to retrieve her smartphone.
