The iPhone 12, which is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 baseband, is the first Apple mobile phone series to support 5G communication. Although 5G is still facing difficulties such as base station laying and high fees before it can be truly popularized, the 5G support feature has opened up sales for the iPhone 12 series with the mentality of "I can do without it, but you can't."
If nothing unexpected happens, this year's new iPhone will also retain the feature of supporting 5G, but the baseband may change. According to Taiwan's Electronic Times, this year's new iPhone series will be equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G baseband, and Samsung will be responsible for chip manufacturing.
Compared with the X55 baseband currently equipped in the iPhone 12 series, the biggest change of the X60 is the use of a 5nm process architecture, which has higher energy efficiency, smaller size, and lower power consumption. Compared with the 7nm process of the Snapdragon X55, the improvement in process allows the Snapdragon X60 to place more transistors in a compact chip, supporting mobile phone manufacturers to create thinner and lighter 5G smartphones.
In addition, the X60 also supports a full range of 5G spectrum from Sub-6G to millimeter wave. This is also the world's first 5G baseband that supports the aggregation of all major 5G frequency bands and their combinations. Perhaps this year's new iPhone that supports millimeter wave will be sold in more regions.
