In order to avoid hypoglycemia, diabetic patients must check their blood sugar levels several times a day, which can actually be handled by smart watches. According to foreign media WinFuture, Samsung and Apple are currently developing smart wearable devices that can measure sugar content, including Apple Watch 7 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch Active3.
The reports say that these smartwatches do not have needles to poke the user's skin to obtain blood samples. Samsung and Apple may use optical sensors, which can then use Raman spectroscopy to determine blood sugar levels. Whether this feature is actually feasible remains to be seen. Developers from the two companies are working with scientists at MIT to improve the reliability of the method.
Samsung is likely to showcase the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch Active3 at an event in the second half of this year, while the new Apple Watch 7 may be launched in September. In other words, we will not be able to confirm whether these devices can measure blood sugar levels until the second half of the year. Currently, there are many health functions on smart watches, including sleep monitoring, heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen detection, etc. If new functions such as blood sugar detection can be added at the hardware level, it will be good news for groups such as diabetics.
