News on the morning of December 29th, earlier this month, Apple pushed version 14.3 update for HomePod and HomePod mini. Since then, some users have discovered that this update allows HomePod mini to be powered by an 18W charger.
Foreign electronics website The 8-Bit found that HomePod mini can now be powered by Apple's own 18W USB-C power adapter, and 18W power supplies from third-party brands such as Aukey can also be used. One user was even able to use an 18W mobile power bank from Cygnett to power HomePod mini, making it easier to carry.
This seems to be a software reduction of the voltage requirements of HomePod mini. Previously, if HomePod mini was used with a power adapter rated at less than 20W, it would display an orange light and would not work properly, including the official 18W charger that comes with Apple's iPhone 11.
However, it is currently impossible to determine whether all 18W chargers can be supported, perhaps only some.
To check if your HomePod mini has been updated to software version 14.3, open the Home app on your iPhone, tap the house icon in the upper-left corner, tap Home Settings, and then tap Software Update.
