After announcing a suspension of shipments to Huawei and cutting capital spending, Micron recently warned of weakening demand from some corporate customers and predicted that oversupply could occur in key markets in 2021.

Huawei is Micron's largest customer. Micron's fourth-quarter financial report for fiscal year 2020 ending September 30 showed that Huawei accounted for nearly 10% of Micron's sales in the quarter. Micron said it has applied for new licenses to supply Huawei, but does not know whether and when it can obtain these licenses.

Micron is not the only US storage company affected, Western Digital and Seagate are also affected. Western Digital has stopped shipping to Huawei before September 15, and is conducting a thorough analysis of its product manufacturing process to determine whether it really needs to apply for a license. At the 2020 Deutsche Bank Virtual Technology Conference held on September 14-15, Western Digital CEO Bob Eulau said: "We have applied for a license to ship flash products and hard disk products to Huawei... We don't know what the specific process or timeline will look like, but we will do everything we can to get the license as soon as possible."

Seagate has also said it is in the final stages of evaluating whether it needs to apply for a license.

Storage suppliers in other regions are also affected. Huawei is also one of the main customers of Samsung and Hynix, with sales from Huawei accounting for 3% and 12% of the two companies' sales respectively.

Previously, industry chain sources revealed that DRAM and NAND flash memory are in oversupply and this situation will continue until 2021. The average inventory of major memory chip manufacturers such as Samsung is close to 4 months. Market research firm TrendForce predicts that in the third quarter of this year, the price of server DRAM products will fall by 10%-15%, the price of mobile DRAM chips will fall by 8%, and the price of consumer DRAM chips will fall by up to 10%.
