Looking at the entire automotive electronic chip field, the application scope of MCU is vast. According to IC Insights' forecast, by 2020, the global automotive MCU market sales will approach US$6.5 billion. However, in the field of automotive chips, the global market is still monopolized by foreign companies such as NXP, Renesas, Microchip, and Infineon. In addition, the global trade situation is becoming increasingly tense, and the market is more looking forward to the replacement of independent and controllable domestic MCU products.
Ding Ding, vice president of ChipON, said that domestic MCUs are gradually opening the door to the domestic market. "At present, domestic companies have a strong desire to use domestic devices, so our breakthrough speed is relatively faster."
The “domestication” substitution wave brings opportunities
Rather than saying that the increasingly tense global trade situation poses challenges to China's domestic semiconductor market, it is better to say that opportunities and challenges coexist.
Ding Ding pointed out that since Xinwang Microelectronics released the 32-bit automotive-grade MCU based on the fully independent IP "KungFu" core architecture processor, this series of products has matched many very suitable customers and projects in the automotive, industrial, power, and communications fields, and these projects are also being pushed forward, and there is hope for mass production by the end of this year.
Ding Ding said, "We have fully realized a complete set of independent technical ecosystems from instruction systems to processor architectures, compilers, and simulation development systems. In addition, we have more than 15 years of experience in creating high-reliability devices, and have gradually gained recognition from domestic first-class brand customers and world-class brand customers. Next, we will strive to make the Kung Fu system cover a wider range of applications, thereby building an industrial ecosystem."
Continuous innovation is the key to growth in the local semiconductor industry
However, Ding Ding also reminded domestic manufacturers that they must not only focus on the opportunities for large-scale domestic substitution. Can China's semiconductor industry grow by simply completing the process of domestic substitution?
Ding Ding explained, "The difficulty of semiconductors lies in the fact that there are so many technical categories, while technology is developing at a high speed. Therefore, under the current opportunities, after enterprises reach a certain scale, they must adjust their mindsets as soon as possible, persist in investing in innovation, establish a technical ecology and industrial ecology suitable for the development of our semiconductors, and strive to achieve transcendence in some areas. Only then can we work with European and American semiconductor companies to promote industry progress and achieve mutual benefit. By then, the bottleneck problem should no longer exist."
In addition, Ding Ding admitted that "Xinwangwei's entry into the mid-to-high-end industrial and automotive-grade MCU field was more due to its early insistence on innovation, investment in core technology research and development, and continuous iteration and accumulation of core technologies."
It is understood that after Xinwang Microelectronics won the "Best MCU Design Award in 2018", "Most Innovative IC Design Enterprise Award in 2019" and "Best Domestic MCU Award in 2019", it successfully won the "China IC Design Achievement Award for the Top Five Chinese Innovative IC Design Companies" in 2020. The company has won multiple IC design industry awards for three consecutive years and has won unanimous recognition and praise from industry peers and users.
