How many cameras are enough on a smartphone? That number seems to be rising as five lenses start to appear on some flagship smartphones. Now, a Samsung patent suggests the company is looking to increase that number to six.
According to Let'sGoDigital, Samsung recently published a patent titled "Device and method for operating multiple cameras for digital photography", which describes a horizontal camera system consisting of five wide-angle lenses and a zoom lens. IT Home learned that the patent also introduces a physical technology to help position these lenses, and you can choose to "tilt" the area inward or outward to improve the resulting image.
"The array camera is also equipped with an LED flash. In 'normal' mode, each image sensor can be pointed in one direction, and then an image algorithm is used to optimize the array configuration. By using mobile sensors, they can be tilted, thereby achieving a larger focal length. For example, with the help of four wide-angle lenses and mobile sensors, panoramic images with a 'full blur effect' can also be captured." In other words, it is to capture panoramic images with blurred backgrounds, which is a feature not currently available on Samsung smartphone models.
Although patents may not eventually become reality, they do indicate the direction a company is working towards. As smartphones continue to push the limits of mobile photography, new technologies must be developed to achieve this. After all, you can’t just keep increasing sensor size and focal length.
