The latest report released by market research firm IDC shows that in the first quarter of 2020, shipments in the Japanese mobile phone market (smartphones + feature phones) reached 7.762 million units, a year-on-year increase of 8.8%.
Among them, smartphone shipments were 7.661 million units, up 9.9% year-on-year. From the manufacturer rankings, Apple ranked first with a market share of 47.8%, up 0.4% year-on-year, with shipments of 3.664 million units; Sharp ranked second with a market share of 13.2%, and its shipments dropped 12.5% to 1.011 million units; Samsung jumped to third place with a market share of 9.0%, with shipments of 689,000 units; Fujitsu ranked fifth with a market share of 8.0%, with shipments of 613,000 units; Kyocera ranked fifth with a market share of 6.3%, with shipments of 483,000 units.
IDC pointed out that there were previous concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic would cause logistics chaos and impact the smartphone market, but smartphone shipments in Japan grew against the trend last quarter, mainly due to a low comparison base. IDC also emphasized that Japan issued an emergency order in the second quarter, causing people to avoid going out and stores to close, so smartphone shipments may be greatly affected.
