With the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2020) in Las Vegas just around the corner, the rumored second-generation Galaxy Fold foldable smartphone may only be a month away. When unfolded, it will be more slender (similar to the Moto Razr) and less like a tablet. Interestingly, the company seems to be brewing a completely redesigned Galaxy Slider prototype. South Korea's ETNews reported that the phone appeared at the CES 2020 booth.
The prototype slides out the rest of the screen at the push of a button. Thanks to the flexible screen design, the sides of the screen can be expanded freely, easily stretching from a slender 6-inch to a wide 8-inch.
However, this prototype uses a polyamide plastic screen material, similar to the first-generation Galaxy Fold folding screen smartphone. The second-generation Galaxy Fold may use a more scratch-resistant and durable glass material.
Compared with the folding screen, the design difficulty of the sliding cover is much higher. After all, the former only needs to consider folding in the middle, while the latter must be curled and stored in the shell. In addition, plastic is easier to bend than ultra-thin glass.
In the second half of last year, Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital reported on related patents many times. It is estimated that it will take Samsung 2 to 3 years to bring the Galaxy Slider prototype to market.
