Faced with Huawei and Samsung entering the 5G chip market, Qualcomm announced that it will popularize 5G to the Snapdragon 8, 7, and 6 series next year, and will support more than 2 billion smartphones.
South Korean media "edaily" reported that although Samsung Electronics and Huawei have successively released 5G chips Exynos 980 and Kirin 990 5G, Qualcomm, which has an advantage in the 5G chip market, has shown great confidence in latecomers.
At IFA 2019, Europe's largest consumer electronics show, Qualcomm stated that, including products under development, there are currently more than 150 5G terminals equipped with Qualcomm's 5G solutions. The newly expanded Snapdragon 5G lineup will support major 5G regions around the world and will be applicable to more than 2 billion smartphones.
Alex Katouzian, vice president of Qualcomm's mobile business, said that in order to promote the commercialization of 5G, Qualcomm took the lead in launching 5G mobile platforms such as 5G modems in the world in 2019. After 2020, OEMs and telecom operators around the world will be able to use the Snapdragon 8, 7, and 6 series to build global 5G networks.
It is worth noting that Qualcomm emphasized that the new series will have software-compatible features, not only supporting millimeter wave (Millimeter Wave) and frequency bands below 6 GHz, but also supporting TDD/FDD, 5G multi-SIM, dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), single and non-single (SA, NSA) networks, and realizing 5G networks in different hardware environments around the world, with a lot of flexibility.
Qualcomm's high-end Snapdragon 8 series will support 5G smartphones that will be launched this year, and detailed information will be released within the year.
On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7 series, which was first released in February, integrates 5G on the chip system (SoC) and supports 5G mainstream regions and frequency bands. In addition, the 7 series uses 7nm technology and also adds new generation AI engine, Elite Gaming and other functions. In the future, mobile phone manufacturers such as OPPO, Realme, Redmi, Vivo, Motorola, HMD global, and LG Electronics will use 7 series products in 5G terminals.
Qualcomm plans to commercialize the 6 series in the second half of 2020, bringing 5G functions to more mid-range smartphones and accelerating the global adoption of 5G.
