Today, Huawei released the Kirin 990 series at the IFA exhibition, and released the world's first flagship 5G SoC chip, the Kirin 990 5G version. In the subsequent media interview, Huawei Fellow Ai Wei answered the question of who is the first commercial 5G SoC chip, and also answered the question of the supply of components in the United States.
Before Huawei released the Kirin 990 series, Samsung rushed to launch the Samsung Exynos 980 processor, and also called it the world's first mobile phone chip with integrated 5G baseband. Today, Huawei's Yu Chengdong also said that the Kirin 990 5G version is the world's first flagship 5G SoC chip.
So, who will be the first to launch? Huawei fellow Ai Wei said that this is a good thing for users, at least there are more choices. But who will be the first to launch depends on who can launch the product first. "Because we can already provide consumers with 5G Soc phones, at least for now we believe that Huawei is the first chip that can be commercially used for 5G SoC." Ai Wei said.
It is understood that on September 19 in Munich, Germany, the Mate30 series equipped with the Kirin 990 5G chip will be released.
Regarding the upcoming Mate 30 series, there are reports that the number of American components used in the phone will be reduced to zero. Ai Wei said that Huawei will never take the initiative to say this.
"For us, it is best to be able to use the power of global innovation, so we will not take the initiative to reduce it to zero," Ai Wei mentioned. "But in this context, what if we can't buy it? If the product is already available to others, this problem will arise. But if the product is not available to others and we innovate it, this will not happen. Therefore, this incident has taught us that when we innovate, we will not be restricted, so we must take the path of innovation."
The "incident" mentioned by Ai Wei refers to the fact that the US Department of Commerce included Huawei in the "Entity List" on May 16 this year (roughly equivalent to a sales ban). In response, Huawei launched a backup plan.
